Filmmaking / Directing : Working with score in hand by Sean Staples

Working with score in hand

As a composer, I've worked with a few directors who like to have me write music from the script that they can then use on-set during shooting. Do you do this? If you do, have you found this helpful to help with 'vibe' for actors and crew?

Doug Nelson

I'd do that if I had anybody locally who could write a score.

I'll tell you that most times, I'm not necessarily local when I've done this for directors...so I'm not sure you need someone local per se. But, I know for a fact that they did this on Joker. Hildur apparently wrote most of the score from script and at least one scene (the bathroom scene), they used her score for inspiration.

Allen Lynch

My brother and I have only had to do that once. They even flew us to New York to be on set to be further immersed in the 'futuristic world'. I don't know how much it helped the actors & crew, but it helped us get a better feel for the tone the director was looking for.

Its really an interesting concept. I feel like score is SUCH a huge part of the overall "feel" of the film, that in some cases i've heard that it alters the film's performances. Put 2 different scores to the same film and you see 2 different films...does that same effect happen to performance? Does it change the vibe? Its interesting to consider.

I think it depends on the project. For example if it is a bio pic with music about an artist, ask the artist. Creative people have different learning styles.
