Filmmaking / Directing : Writers and Directors by Jim Ramsbottom

Writers and Directors

I come from the word/character/story side of the filmmaking equation and am probably myopic on some issues. What do producers and directors wish writers were more aware of/attuned to/savvy about?

Doug Nelson

The simple answer: Everything. What you're asking takes a few years in film school to answer.(or at least a lot of study & time).

We are in a revolution of “binge” watching tv/live streaming etc. Netflix, Amazon etc kicked it off but now contenders like Apple and others are mushrooming the boom. Pilot is its own world, and I think writers who can execute and master the difference between film and pilot, will soon be in even higher demand in future. Thats just one category. There are tons of others, but whether tv/streaming/web OR film ......There is one common denominator crucial to any platform.....STORY AND CHARACTERS. As @Doug mentioned. This answer really needs a term at film school to comprehensively cover all tips and pointers. Use free info from web. All gurus do not charge money for advice. Scott Myers @intothestory is a wealth of info, he’s been a teacher of mine in past, but also does free blogs. Download all his PDFs.

What do they wish writers were more aware of ... how to structure, tell, and write a good, entertaining story. Every studio, producer and director want to get the eyeballs of the audience into the theaters or on their streaming service. So if "it ain't on the page. It ain't on the stage."
