You know the money is out there, but you just can't seem to talk the people holding it into investing in your grand opus. So, what's the trick? How do you get the elusive blank check?
Here's a tip... Find out their interests. I mean, if your goal is to build that credit list, you may want to set aside your passion project for the time being and propose creating something that interests the investor. Case in point... I was recently discussing new projects with a past investor, and I floated a documentary idea that is interesting, but not exactly my big passion project. They immediately said... "I can get you the money for that." So, you can probably guess what I'm working on right now.
Now, I'm not exactly striving to build my reel anymore, but I do love making films, so why not? The point is... if you're only in this to do what you want to do all the time, you may be better off saving your cash and self-funding. But, if you love making movies like I do, then go make one. Make it the best you can. Don't shortcut or fall asleep on the job. Tell a great story on screen and then move on to the next, until you can show the world your vision and let them hear your voice.
Good Luck!

Michael Fitzer, MFA There’s currently an Ask Me Anything event happening in the Stage 32 Filmmaking Lounge, where director Kirstin Karlhuber is answering members questions about indie filmmaking. This may be a great topic to ask her about. You can comment your questions here:
