4-Part Class: Directors: How to Work with Actors (From Audition to Post-Production)

Learn from Emmy-Nominated Showrunner Todd Slavkin!

The four part class will guide directors through the process of working with actors, from the casting process, through pre-production and rehearsals, production, and post-production with ADR. Many directors are technically efficient and brilliant shot-makers, but don’t have the necessary tools to work with actors to create their best performance possible. Without top-notch performances from every actor in a show, even the best stories and scripts can sadly fall flat. Directors are responsible for every performance on screen, and if you want to keep working and have a long, illustrious career, it’s imperative to deliver flawless performances in every show you direct.

Every actor is different and requires unique direction specific to their personality to help them realize their best work. Often inexperienced directors read academic books about directing and become obsessed with giving direction that is too intellectualized and difficult for an actor to quickly digest on set. Often directors want to impress the actors by being too verbose or too clever and can easily “lose” an actor, who will eventually tune out that director and direct themselves, or lean on another actor to give them direction. The most successful directors are able to cater their direction to a specific actor using clear, concise communication techniques that help the actor deliver their best work.
