most dramas and literatures traditionally revolve around relatively small stakes which are specific to and reflect contemporary situations. Much less effective are generic derivative high stakes stories about Dr Evil trying to take over the world (for what purpose?) Petty much everyone from 7th grade on understands the basic concepts of what a story is. But our "experts" in Hollywood and at the university literary industrial complex have unlearned all of the innate concepts that a child knows. To be fair Hollywood also now says that in addition to not knowing how to compose a story they also don't care about the petty concerns of American audiences because its a global market and they have to cater to the interests of the global marketplace which craves only the comfort of familiarity and the "shared cultural experience" of debating the merits of whatever branding event they endured over the weekend.
