Back in the days of film everything was planned out color wise, and then there was "Timing" done late in the process. It was all on film with reels and dials. By 2000, it was a major tech change when "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" was released as it was the first film to be digitally colored. I learned CC (color correction, timing) in 2010, and worked on lots of shorts, and I was at home and not in a suite. That's how democratized technology was then, and more so, now. Now it's true, colorists are involved, and so much can be changed, saved to give the audience an emotional and reaction that the creative powers want.

Lindbergh E Hollingsworth So true. But IMO and experience the broadening of the tools has led (as is natural and inevitable) to a severe lack of actual talent and artistic sensibility. I have hundreds of LUTs on my editing system.... and today most all camera ops are using LUTs at first instance on their viewers... It too often has become a pick-and-choose candy store rather than any kind of directed artistic intention. Oh well...

I think as well as what Shadow Dragu-Mihai, Esq., Ipg mentioned, that the artistic choices are much faster now. Filmmakers already know what look they want and the option to change it later means they don't have to painstakingly make a decision that will be concrete. I guess its just and evolution of the tools we have available now. Just like the digital camera, people aren't worried about wasting film so they snap everything.
