How are you producers doing lately? What is exciting? What are some of your challenges?

How are all my producers doing lately? What is exciting? What are some of the challenges you are facing? I'll start - I'm excited to see that true independent filmmaking is making a resurgence and more and more indie films under $15MM are getting greenlit. I have an awesome feature film I"m producing that I've been getting some bigger meetings with production companies that I wasn't able to get last year. As for challenges? I feel like there is a shift in the agencies with a lot of agents moving to management - trying to navigate the new managers who are a bit more aggressive because of their agenting background has caused me to have to sharpen my quick-response skills. Curious to hear what everyone else is experiencing?

Congratulations on getting the bigger meetings, Amanda Toney!

I agree that many agents are moving into management so they have the lattitude to produce. I see that happening a lot on big and smaller levels. When TV series packaging fees went away the economics of agencies shifted quite a bit. And I also see more under $15MM feature films getting into production and that is accelerating in emerging markets all around the world as new areas build their production infrastructures. I was just on a Zoom with film commissions from Jordan and Costa Rica and its happening there and Uganda is close behind. Its a great time to be working in indie film all over the globe. As per, I've heard that acquisitions are rising at the networks and streamers because more indie films are getting made and its safer for them to acquire finished product. Exciting times.

Amanda Toney hi Amanda, thanks for posting this.

I’m doing fine thanks. I met Sam Sokolow at Focus - meet the makers in London yesterday and we had a blast. Meeting Sam just gives me so much energy.

What excited me is to have seen so many potential co-production partners and the resurgence of tax incentives, which can be either through official or unofficial routes. This I think, will be a game changer for indie films in 2025.

Challenges: I think if I was just limiting myself to being a writer/director then it would prove difficult to overcome the curse of being a first-time feature director. However, I think that now that I’m stepping up as a Producer with my own company, that to me will be a game changer.
