Hey guys. I'm wondering what is a better option as a first-time screenwriter when I have a final version of my script. Is it wiser to try to pitch and sell the script to a studio for production and distribution, or is it more beneficial to try and finance independently and complete the entire film myself. Of course, as a writer, that would mean collaboration with directors and such. Just wondering what thoughts or experiences others have had in a similar situation.

truth is, as a first time screenwriter, pitching to a studio isnt going to happen unless youre related to someone. If you just finished your first script, its time to get feedback. professional feedback. then rewrite. then repeat. And when it's really ready, do some practice pitches to see the response. submit to contests. get some buzz for it. then start writing your 2nd project because 99% of first projects dont go anywhere and for most, it takes quite a few to be at a pro level. its a sprint AND a marathon. but dont rush the process.

I would even go a step further than Danny and say "forget it". Put your wonderful first script aside and write the next one. Continue until you finished 3-5 features. Then, begin rewriting the first one and ask for professional feedback. The reason why it is smart to do so is that you avoid getting the shocking feedback for your first script right now. By writing the 2-4 next scripts you'll learn and your knowledge will help you to look at your first script with more experience and distance. It then is much easier to receive a feedback. Never forget that a moving target (a writing writer) is harder to hit. Good luck and all the best for you!
