I have a question for people on here? I have paranoid schizophrenia, the most stigmatized illness a person can have. I wrote a screenplay about a man that finds happiness and love. It’s a comedy about how a person really acts when they have the illness. So my question is this….is the world ready for a hero with paranoid schizophrenia??

When it comes to writing the question is never whether the world is ready to hear/see it, it's whether you're ready to actually tell it.

Take Shelter, Shutter Island, Donnie Darko, A Beautiful Mind? I'd say so. Take that as a positive sign to move forward, my friend.

There's also another plan: use script as a writing sample for employment/assignment gigs/impress peers to keep you on their contact list for future favors.

The world is always ready for a great story and it takes a lot of courage to share one so personal - even as (or especially as) a comedy. I say go for it, Matthew Olson! Wishing you great success with it.

The Caveman's Valentine is another book/film with a paranoid schizophrenic protagonist. But if you can paint a more realistic portrait of someone with this disease then that would be intriguing.

A Beautiful Mind won plenty of Oscars.
The key is to write a compelling script with a theme and a character who learns from that theme.

I think it’s incredibly brave and inspiring that you’re sharing your story here. The world absolutely needs more authentic representations of people who are dealing with mental illness and mental well-being, especially ones that challenge the stereotypes and show the humanity and joy can exist alongside the struggles.

We are definitely ready for a hero with paranoid schizophrenia! There are so many real-life stories that need to be told and shared with the world! I would watch this, and many others are also tired of the same recycled/reused stories. Change is needed!

In 2005, I created a one minute short no-budget comedy about a nutty psychiatrics doctor. It became so popular that I decided to do a lot more with the same character. In practice, this is the reason why I in 2013 received a prize for best directing. And then two long no-budget movies with him. After that, my main character has been Albert Zweistein, math genius and scientist with Asperger syndrom.

If you can do it successfully, we are ready!
