Screenwriting : Social Media Sites by Alex Sarris

Social Media Sites

Hey guys, as a screenwriter I am finding more and more people are spending a fair chunk of their day on Social Media Sites and sites similar to Stage 32. When do you get your writing done and how much time to get for it and site hopping ?

No Le Picante

People who are good writers it doesn't take them long to write! I have my own independent produdtion co. and I write everything! The best way to write is to just do it even if it's terrible. Don't think about it just do it! Let the words and the development flow! You're going to always be revising and rewriting a script anyways, but you need somewhere to start! If you have something to work with, thats better than a blank page!

Thanks NLP. you are correct, the writing is quick though it is the planning and outlining of a story that takes the time. I am finding I spend probably 1-2 hours a day writing/developing and 1-2 hours on websites/forums including Writer Arena. http://forum.writerarena.com/index.php?action=forum

I find it invaluable to network. If you keep it down to a couple sites, you won't be spending too much time away from your writing. I've found that Stage 32 is like a one stop shop :) Stop in at the lounge and join some great discussions! Networking is vital to us screenwriters! Now, enjoy your writing, Alex!

The new model is building your audience first. With all the social media sites out there - and growing everyday - you need to partition your time...allowing for the networking phase and the working phase.

Sounds good to me also.

Everybody has their own system, success being a blend of content generation and networking. More scripts means more things you can pitch/make, more contacts means more people who may participate in or develop a project with you. I seem to get a few short scripts banged out every week anymore (often on breaks at work), spend at least a few minutes everyday in communication with somebody industry-wise, and about an hour a day on making sure my current projects are going forward. Key in to a balance that works and move things forward I figure.

Jacqueline, I sometimes need to take a break from my writing when it's an 8 hour day, and visit the site to see what's going on, and to get my second wind!!

Janet Scott

Hiya Alex... you have a point there smiles.

I actually don't use other social networks. Stage 32 is it for me! I don't tweet. I don't use Facebook -- tried it, didn't like it. And, I don't use Linkedin. I find it all to be so arbitrary. I prefer to focus on my offline life -- my family and my work. Stage 32 is great because of all the discussions, blogs and its sense of community. We share and learn new things together. It has focus, a true north that we all are heading towards -- creating films. No photos of cute cats doing cute things here! At least, I haven't seen any -- yet. :)

Love what you said, Beth! I've met all of my writing friends here as well. I'll leave facebook to view my families updates.
