Week #3 - preparing and staying focused

It’s time consuming but I’ve created a master list of companies and managers I’d like to reach, which script/s they’d resonate with and why, notable films, 2 line personalised email hook, contacts - that last part is the grind. If I contact/meet them I add it there to keep on track. Anyone I come across in trades (top 10 producers etc) I’ll add to that list of there’s fit. ChatGPT (boo hiss) is fabulous doing this kind of research. Yes you have to fact check but it gives you a place to start. Comment if you want me prompts. Re staying focused when it’s slow: that’s a Work In Progress. I’m getting more into directing shorts to build my skills. I’m at a stage where other emerging producers/editors etc ask if we can collaborate on shorts. It keeps the relationships and writing brain developing. Note: I wish I was more focused!

Hi, Phoenix Black. Making a master list is a great idea! I do it on a smaller scale. Thanks for the idea. Hope you get script requests, meeting requests, sell your scripts, and more! I think I saw one or two of your short films. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your films!

Juliana Philippi

Phoenix Black Love that, the list method is so smart, I will keep that tip in mind!

Meriem Bouziani

That’s a great way to organize companies.

All my best wishes in realizing your goals.

This is an invaluable post, Phoenix Black. Surprised it's not getting a bigger response. Maybe people find this too daunting? I hope not, because this is the kind of planning, effort and discipline that it takes.

Great share.

Hey , Phoenix Black . Great job. Sorting out what will work for you will provide more clarity and possibility. Good luck !!!!!!

I'm incredibly jealous of how organized this is. I mean that to be complimentary.

I'm about to start this kind of research and would love to know how you use chat gpt to help with your research, what prompts you use etc. I mostly use it like an organization tool because that's not my strong suit.

I wish you good luck. Last year I went through various lists on the internet, lists with production companies. Most refuse to accept scripts from us who have no agent. Or the companies have no email address on their web site. But I found about 100 to write to.

Phoenix Black

Goran, I'm in exactly the same spot. Can't find contacts to email them. The vast majority won't read queries if not from a manager. The few I do find (IMDb Pro used to be better with contact) I get no reply. But still, we trudge on!

Nice that you liked what I wrote, The first list I used was wikipedia's list with production companies in USA. In many cases Wikipedia included links to the individual companies. In other cases wikipedia doesn't include any link, so I googled, and found the same company on some other list. In this way I found more lists to go through. In this way I went through a few thousand companies, to find 100 I could actually write to,
