Filmmaking / Directing : Artist by James Edward St.Clair

Artist

In such a visual medium as film, it is strange to me how so many filmmakers pay little or no attention to art direction. Even on a budget there are many, many artists who would love to have their work included in a film. I have offered my art and the art of some of my many award winning artists friends to several people and no one seems to be interested. What's up with that?

James, Please elaborate with some examples. My guess would be like your art under your photos? Where a scene is written in to show your art in a gallery setting? Or like pics on a wall in a set?

Pics on the wall is mainly what I am talking about. If you ever saw the movie Tower Heist, try to imagine the penthouse without those gigantic paintings. Also art direction includes subconscious things like the use of red in The Sixth Sense, whenever something was about to happen. The general use of color can effect the mood of a scene in many ways. I hope that helps.

I do know what you are referring to. I played around with it in one of my reels called suspense. Not as drastic as Oliver Stone in Natural Born Killers....However I do like the use of filters / colors in Post. Another was Butterfly Effect when he would look to the sky.

I often use my friends' work as background pieces in the set dressing. A lot of producers get worried about copyright issues I think, but those are way easier to get around if you know the artist(s) personally, rather than getting permission from say the M.C. Escher people... Other than copyright issues, I can't think of a solid logical argument against using an artists work as part of the set. Curious as to what some producers would say to this....
