http://ow.ly/GBdcW The latest entry of The Hobbit franchise is called The Battle of the Five Armies, and I guess I have to first say that I found the title a tad puzzling because I only counted four…armies, that is. There were elves, dwarves, man and orcs. I guess the fifth comes about if you divide those orcky things into two different factions, but, I don’t know, that sorta felt like cheating to me. At any rate, I think the story of J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel to The Lord of the Rings could be used as a metaphor for filmmaker Peter Jackson and his production of this final installment of the adventures of a little person called Bilbo Baggins…

Howard, you mention a missing army and a metaphor for filmmaker Peter Jackson, how about a comment on the film? I thought it was excellent, while there were the inevitable slow moments, there were also moments of brilliance and outstanding filmmaking - I love these stories, but surely that is the last, they couldn't possibly milk another, lol.

Thanks for reading and commenting. I thought all I did was comment on the film. I thought the filmmaking was pretty routine by today's standards. I had no emotional connection to anything that went on in the movie.

I found the first installment of "The Hobbit" as interesting as watching a postman sort the mail. Maybe you have to be from Middle Earth to enjoy it.

I wish you hadn't said that, I may just be from Middle Earth as I enjoyed the trilogy, while I loved Lord of the Rings.

J. R. R. Tolkien was a medievalist. We speak Middle English -- and that's why he called it "Middle Earth." I do enjoy READING Tolkien because all the values are medieval to the core. By the way, my suspense drama -- written for the stage and for the radio -- will be a film. Title is "A Worthie Woman All Hir Live" because it's based on The Wife of Bath Tale (by Chaucer). A San Francisco company has produced it. Soon a group in Leeds, England will.

Hey, thought this was awesome, but isn't there five armies; the orks, the elves, the dwarves, the shapeshifters, and the laketown people

Also, thanx for the add
Thanks for reading and commenting. I'm not sure who the shapeshifters are. Others have told me, it's the eagles at the end. I don't know. I found it a bit confusing myself.

Yeah, it was. They were the guys who rode on the eagles and then they fell onto the orcs and turned into bears. But yeah, you're right. It was confusing. I was not a fan of the first two hobbit movies, but i surprisingly liked this one.
Yes, the shapeshifter would turn into a bear, but I thought he was only one person? If I'm right, not much of an army, lol.

It reminded me of that 200 page section of the Iliad where it lists who killed who and how.
