Not paying

So how do I handle not being paid after being HIRED to work a short one day photo shoot. There were two of us and neither of us has heard from the photographer in just over a month. The photographer and the owner of the event appeared to already had an on going relationship from different locations same event. Me personally wants to warn others not to work with him. I dont like to bad mouth people but what would be a proper way of dealing with this. I left voice message today and sent an inquiring email today. This is a well known event with some big names.

What were the terms? Was anything in writing specifying when you'd be paid? A contract even verbal can be brought into court, especially since another party was similarly cheated. There is always small claims court though. If you've already turned over your data files, I think you're boned.

As mentioned, file in small claims court in Texas. If your local newspaper has a "consumer affairs" reporter, get some coverage. Definitely file against the deadbeats with your local Better Business Bureau, Consumer Affairs Div. If -- after you have done all those things & NOT gotten paid -- and you want to fight DIRTY, there are cute ways of doing it. But I recommend taking the traditional steps FIRST. Good luck.

Ditto, contract is always a good thing. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt first, just in case things are too busy, or an assistant dropped the ball. Find out from the assistant first what is going on (just in case), but continually send the invoice, mark it past due (after 30-45 days).

i would contact your county's department of labor and file a complaint. they will make him pay you and will fine him for violation. plus pay you penalties.

Debbie Croysdale

The bigger they are the harder they fall. Try the "polite route" to getting paid, but as Linda Ann points out, Consumer Affairs Names and Shames.
