What should I include in my Film Reel?

Hello everyone as I am trying to develop and look more professional as an actor, what do I put into my Film Reel and how long should it last? Is it acceptable to add work from college? This would be work from the play Our country's Good and Decedance by Steven Berkoff. Any piece of advice that people have would be much appreciated. also things to definitely add and things to stay away from. Thank you, Shauna Lebihan. lebihanjshauna@gmail.com

Hey Shauna, As far as I am aware, reels shouldn't really be longer than about 2 minutes as agents/casting directora are so pressed for time. This means that you need to open on your strongest piece of work and begin right in the action. Montages are mainly are no-no, they just want to see you listening and reacting. I'm not sure if you're aware of your brand yet (the kinds of roles you could realistically be cast for)? If not, do some research around this first before trying to put a reel together. I advise that you don't ask family and friends since they have an opinion about you already. Write up a questionnaire with adjectives for your appearance and the kinds of jobs acquaintances and/or strangers think you look like you might do. Regarding filmed stage work I would say keep it as a separate film clip only if it's been properly filmed and the sound is crisp. There's no harm in having other things for agents/CDs to look at (including a monologue of you want) but I would say keep your reel to filmed scenes/excerpts of screenplays. I'm also in the process of building my reel and recently put out a call on here for screenwriters to send me their work so I get the need to get on with it! I hope that helps and all the best, Jen :-)
