I wrote a short story for my Masters in Creative Writing . The professor as well as several of my fellow classmates stated it was the best they read all semester. It was suggested I should "do something" with it. I would like to create a short film script from the story. The story is told in first person and I would like the script to be the same. Any advice on how to accomplish this, to include script writing classes I can take in DC, NY or on-line.

There is a UK comedy called "peep show". Everything is shot from a characters POV this may be the look you are after. Watch an episode, may be what you want and a good laugh.

Be ready to make lots of changes in the script. The format of a script is different from a prose. Action lines should be descriptive from a third person. Well, if you want to still make it an I narrative, a character serving as voice over has to be included. Then you have your dialogue.

I'd try this: sit down, close your eyes and "run" the movie in your mind and then write down what you "see" this will "frame" the piece for you in "movie" terms. and then write it completely (finish a crap draft) and then go back and cut and polish.

I am partnering with an experienced SAG actor in my city, who is venturing into indie film productions and learning to become a director. {see Stage32 page Chaz Grundy}. My novel was published in 2012, and is available at Amazon.com and BN.com Adaptation to a screenplay is underway - and a very big, different challenge from the written form of a novel! I would be floundering IF NOT for my partnership with Chaz.

You can write it as a script, and just write it from the point of view of the main character. Just remember: film is a visual medium. If a character is having thoughts, etc. you need to find a visual way to present them. And don't do voice-over "here is what I'm thinking." Rookie move ;)

@Erik. Yeah, they are numerous directions the story can be interpreted. A voice over is one.

WOW ! Shawn, imho 2k is incredibly expensive for a 15 minute short writing, but since advertising our own services is clearly allowed on the lounge now (did this change when the site went down?), I'll offer my services as an award winning short scriptwriter for free in this one instance ;-)

I promote people and groups in my circle all the time, but went ahead and pulled the post just to be safe. I don't want the boss mad at me! I just think Sunday should know there are other avenues out there, such as yourselves. She doesn't have to become a pro screenwriter, a task that takes years, to make her story happen. There's quite a few writers on here who can save her years.

I think this Lounge has some rule or other about self promotion, hence my relatively cheeky comment Shawn ;-) And I'm all for the free market, so as one writer to another, I do think you should look at your pricing model, offering to charge someone $2000 for a 15 page script written is unlikely to get too many takers.

Thanks for the feedback guys. No rate worries here - I'm booked for the year. Don't really have time for more clients as it is, but I would make an exception for S32, and wanted to spark conversation.
