Screenwriting : Writing Inspiration by Florin Şumălan

Writing Inspiration

I told this yesterday to someone and I will share this here too, maybe it's useful for some people.

I don't have a story yet, I am still searching but I want to tell about one thing I do about this.

I have some questions like "where do we come from", "what are we doing on this planet", "what's the meaning of life"...

I've downloaded some pictures with things from which I would make a story: space, nature and animals, people, microscopy, historical photos, paintings, architecture and others. Sometimes I put them in a random slideshow and watch a while like I'm watching a movie.

Maybe this can be a way to get inspiration, to find the story.

Try what if?

As you consider ideas, think about how they affect people’s actions. Stories are not about people sitting and thinking but people doing.

Salvatore Bono

This could be quite a thought provoking concept. In my opinion, using the downloaded pictures to arrange a story is one way to visualize what you want to say. In addition, draft an outline of these photos in a cohesive and systematic structure, addressing the questions you mentioned in your post. A solid story outline will enable you to clearly envision what you want to convey before you start drafting an actual screenplay. Remember, everyone is different, so, I'm sharing with you what works for me.

Imo Wimana Chadband

Everyone's process is different. My stories thus far are inspired by life events, personally, or from the world. That's where my inspiration comes from. My 4th script I just started birthed from a simple status on Instagram from a friend, sharing a small story from their past.

Just don't force it. It will come to you. Find the best environment that makes you think, and if that's using the pictures, then go for it. Once it generates those ideas, it's all good.

Best wishes, bro!

Like pre story boarding kinda

Whatever works for you. I sometimes have a powerful image of something in my mind that I cannot shake, I then try figure out what the story could be that leads to that image, or stems from it. Other times I feel a particular emotion and I want to write something to convey and address that emotion. Other times, while out and about (people watching) someone's peculiar action may give me the idea for a character and then I figure out what obstacle would be their worst nightmare and work from there. I'm rambling - I'll finish how I started - whatever works for you.

Florin Şumălan

Karen Stark, I don't understand how. You are saying something like Julia Petrisor says?

Florin Şumălan

Stephen Floyd, I will think about that. Thank you

Florin Şumălan

Dan MaxXx, I don't know.. I don't like the idea of putting your brain in some kind of hallucinating state to make you "creative". Maybe eating foods that help you brain, not things that damage your brain.

Florin Şumălan

Salvatore Bono, it could be a good idea to create an outline. Thank you

Florin Şumălan

Julia Petrisor, I would answer the questions I have, but a story could be made even if I don't have the answers - a story made of questions. It could work too creating maybe a fantasy, sci-fi world and connect them to real things from this world. I will think about what you said. Thank you

Florin Şumălan

Imo Wimana Chadband, thank you. Same to you

Karen Stark

Florin, what if, is a good way to create plot ideas What if a King was murdered by his brother...Hamlet. What if, allows the brain to expand on a premise. What if an Alien came to earth and told humanity to save the planet it was going to destroy them. What if, is a good starting point to create or you can ask, what would happen if. So when you look at your creation board you ask what of or what would happen if.

Craig D Griffiths

Tell your story. The story of a man trying to find a way of expressing the question and in doing so tells the story.

Florin Şumălan

Karen Stark, yes, this "what if" could be a good start for a story. I don't know how I will do things, but I will consider this too. Thank you

Florin Şumălan

Craig D Griffiths, I thought about something similar too - a man living his life, walking through darkness but not be conscious about it..sometimes he sees fragments of light in that darkness and starts realizing that he doesn't know almost nothing about the world he lives in and start asking questions about everything...

I think that you can make a great story from this; it's hard to make the story beautiful, not boring (where you just see a man who puts some questions) or fake (where he "was touched by the light" and he is pretending that he "walks the good way").

Maybe it could work something like "The Matrix" or "The Truman Show", I don't know..

Karen Stark

Florin I like the way you are doing it too. We are all different. I use music as a big scene creating tool.
