English Scripts for European-based Productions

I'm curious if any of you have had experience writing a screenplay (in English) that was set in Europe, and filmed there with a European crew. And if so, how did the process go for you?

I have not filmed there but have written about European based stories. I also looked at it from a Producer's perspective. Lots of grants and film incentives there. Hungary was especially nice for those reasons last I checked.

(1) Ok, so one of the things you're saying is a European film crew will never be fluent enough in English to pick up certain subtleties a native speaker will. And that could harm the end product. Yes, it could. Only solution is to constantly double check if people really get what you are saying, trying to explaining to them.

I had a writer-friend from Germany casually tell me that they're looking for English scripts to shoot, and that as long as the script translation was good enough for the crew, that the crossover works well. Of course the actors would just use the English script, spoken with their cool accents (which is preferable). Obviously there would be a bit more complication involved with the rewrites, etc...but I'm wondering if anyone here has gone through the process of selling their U.S. script to a European company.

Yes I saw Earl sending you in the right direction. I also know that there is a woman that knows a lot of shooting in Hungary on Stage32. At least ahe was. When I have time I woll look it up for you. But be patient with contacting people all over the place. And making promisses. I tend to do that and before you know you " clusterfucked" your own projec with people that can not push your project forward but still want a piece of the cake that can not even be served yet.

Right now I'm working on that. There is an American director interested in a cript I'm working on. The first Director was from Eastern Europe and really wanted to direct the story but could not do it because gosts of the past. This director who shot a simular movie wants to read it. Now I am thinking that it could be shit in Europe but with a mixed American-European crew. Still I am looking for most of the leads to be German but almost fluend in English.
