I have a story that is very European but could also resonate in the US. My father was a Czech song writer, singer, actor and director who is now known for the sentimental songs of "Old Prague" but he also had a political side and when the Nazis came he made fun of them through his songs. They didn't appreciate it and eventually the Gestapo arrested him and sent him to the Mauthausen concentration camp where he died a month after I was born, so I never met him. Some years ago the late Arnost Lustig, a Holocaust survivor and author of many books about the Holocaust encouraged me to make a documentary, which we died with FAMU the Czech film school - Arnost considered my father as a symbol of the non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
