Logline posting on the website

I was wondering... I see that some people submit their loglines on the website. Is it really worth it? Did any of you tried it and did it help you? Thanks!

Joe Thayer

I've posted a log line or two and gotten some feedback. It was good to get some feedback, but like with any feedback, you need to take it with a grain of salt. Maybe you'll get some perspective you didn't think of.

Evelyne Gauthier

Joe Thayer Thanks! That's pretty much what I was thinking.

Hi, Evelyne! I definitely have found it helpful! I've posted loglines and received feedback that has helped me tighten up my logline. It's also a great way for executives to find your logline... and of course just another great way to network with your fellow creatives!

Evelyne Gauthier

Thanks, Monica and Dan! :) I was also wondering. If my screenplay hasn't been written yet, should I wait to test my logline on the website?

JJ Hillard

Evelyne: It's usu. a good practice to 'test' your loglines on others, esp. non-writers. If possible do it face-to-face and judge their honest reactions. It won't cost you anything. I've had course assignments to do exactly that before launching into screenwriting mode. I've read that some managers request preliminary loglines from their writers on a regular basis to see which ones might be the best to invest more time and effort in developing.

Thanks, JJ Hillard! :)

I don't know if it's worthwhile or not nowadays. Years back I posted loglines and scripts seeking comments and advice. That seemed to infuriate a couple of ogres and trolls, so I just stopped doing it. Essentially, I concluded that it wasn't worth my time.

Evelyne Gauthier

I will take comments with a grain of salt. ;)

Evelyne Gauthier while it’s true, if your script is requested based on your posted logline, you’d want to be prepared with one, I would still post my logline. If you haven’t written your script, your logline may in fact change (we all know how our stories take on a life of their own once we start writing!), but I feel it’s great practice to learn how to write a great logline in general. So, I say put it out there anyway. Why wait to get feedback when you can have eyes and feedback while you get your writing done? Loglines are tricky little things and the more practice we get writing them and rewriting them, the stronger that muscle becomes. It’s (the logline) a great part of your elevator pitch and handy to have in your back pocket.. at times, the way in!

Thank you, Monica. :) I finally posted it (after several rewriting, but I'm not quite satisfied by it). The synopsis is pretty much done as well. Maybe I'll also use the Logline Review service offered by Stage 32. Thanks for the link, CJ, I'll take a look. :)

Eric Roberts

I used the logline review service, very helpful! I got a good logline coach there.

I posted a logline (long-line :) nine years ago, and if nothing else it’s a great way to showcase and keep your ideas accessible…easier and more fun to find again.. hiding in various drives and clouds.
