Distribution : Seeking Distribution by Shelby Thompson

Shelby Thompson

Seeking Distribution

Hey all! I'm Shelby. I'm looking to learn more about the pitching and distribution process, specifically for documentaries. I have 2 short films that I directed and edited, but my first film, "Relentless", is a student academy award winner and screened at Sundance, as well as multiple other accolades. Since COVID, we stopped going to festivals and sharing it. I think it's such a powerful story that resonates with every one and I don't want it to just sit there and not be watched. Please check out the website and trailer, and let me know if you can provide any guidance! Thanks! https://www.relentless-film.com/

Hey, Shelby Thompson! Congrats on your documentary! You can absolutely still pitch a completed project, and Stage 32 has more than a few producers who are looking to acquire completed material. You can reference our free Stage 32 Pitching Guidebook for your pitch, whether written or verbal: https://www.stage32.com/sites/stage32.com/themes/two/pdfs/happy-writers/Stage_32_Pitching_Guidebook.pdf

Definitely reach out to our Director of Script Services, Jason Mirch, who is excellent at matching projects with potential executives (or managers, in your case): J.Mirch@stage32.com

Wow! Congrats, Shelby! Your doc looks great. I'm so glad it's finding success! Distribution is always tricky, especially for documentaries, but there's definitely a way forward. Actually, something that comes to mind is a webinar we held recently with my friend Liz Manashil who ran the self-distribution program at Sundance Institute. She goes into creative ways to find distribution, including impact distribution, along with other methods to build your audience yourself. Short films are difficult to get distribution for but there are some sales agents that specialise in this area. These are sometimes distributed as collections or receive TV spots, so if you look into shorts that you have seen or looked up that have been distributed in this way, you can search these on IMDb and look for who handles the worldwide distribution.
