Screenwriting : Query emails by Brent Rouleau

Query emails

question for the group: I'm about to send out a batch of query letters but I was told by a screenwriter friend that since my personal email address does not contain my actual name, that would be a problem. So: does it matter if my name is part of my email and/or should I get a new one specifically for querying?

Mike Romoth

As with everything, clarity is your friend. You want to hammer your name into someone stranger's head any way you can. Your e-mail can be an ally in this process.

Melanie Star Scot

Great question!!! This is the first I've heard of it. I'm interested in what the pros have to say.

CJ Walley

Depends on what your email handle currently is. It doesn't really matter unless you're going by something like cokesnorter69.

Tristan Hutchinson

From my experience as an author, no it doesn't matter if your name is in your email or not. What matters is what you add in the beginning of your query letter. Producers and agents get a bunch of query letters all the time, you need to be the one that stands out, That grabs their attention right off the bat.

Dan MaxXx

It dont matter. Legit reps care about subject line and brief query. Look up Manager John Zaozirny. He posted a tweet thread about querying

Craig D Griffiths

In general terms (for me). The less personalised something is, the less I take it as credible. Like I said, just me perhaps. I have:

craig.griffiths@griffithscreative.com.au. vs craiggriffiths@gmail.com or dude@somemail.uk

The other comment I would make. I haven’t read your letter. But try to customise it. This doesn’t work for an email blast.

But you are targeting people. Focus on them, not you.

Once again, I am in full agreement with CJ Walley - I find the idea that someone thinks it matters to be strange, to say the least.

Justin Reilly

I don't think it matters at all. I've never even considered it.

Brent Rouleau

3 yes and 5 no so far. thanks everyone. no time limit on this so if you have an opinion, much appreciated

Ewan Dunbar

Its good to have your name in there but as long as your email address doesn't sound unprofessional it is probably ok.

Brent Rouleau

thanks, Ewan. we'll make it 3 yes and 6 no
