Hello lovely people. I have a situation where I wrote and produced a short film with a very specific premise (and casting). We are working to turn this into a limited series. One of the other people who worked on the film began writing a companion piece with the exact same premise, and is now trying to sell their own TV series. I feel like my IP is violated, but not sure what to do, or if I have any recourse.
Consult entertainment attorney...I'd say your advantage is you already have this premise filmed, and if the script is copyrighted, that's even better, but on the other side premise is not something you can actually have only for yourself...
If your film is already made and available you have copyright on it and can just sit tight and wait to see if the other person generates any real progress with theirs. Can't stop them ptiching ideas and trying anyway you can only do something once they have the production done, dusted and give you the green light to go seek legal.
Try to start a conversation with them, first. If they're not willing to discuss these issues, then hire an attorney.
Too many people go right to legal action, when I've found having a rational conversation with another human being often works.
