So, you're writing features, and teleplays, taking seminars, classes doing pitches to industry people, and looking to sign a deal with an agent. These are the things screenwriters do, right?
How is that going for you?
Please share your successes and or failures and what's working for you.
And please, no pitches for screenwriting services.

I'm writing scripts, taking webinars, reading articles and blogs, sending query letters to producers/actors/etc., learning more about pitching, reading more scripts, etc., Phillip E. Hardy, "The Pro From Dover". I think I learn something each time I do these things. I've also had success from doing these things. Success like selling scripts, getting script requests, building relationships, etc.
I've also had failures, which I learned from. One failure was sending query letters that were very long and boring. I didn't hear back from those people. Now, I know it's better to send short, interesting query letters. Another failure was sending out scripts before they were ready to be shared. Now, I try to wait extra time before sending out my scripts. This gives me more time to check over my scripts one more time (or a few times) to make sure they're ready.

Phillip E. Hardy, "The Pro From Dover" - you have changed your profile pic! I did an online screenwriting course back in January/February of this year and I am attempting to put what I learned into practice by rewriting some of my screenplays. Only rewritten one so far and am the latter stages of the next one. Mainly read articles from mailing lists and a podcast. I'm enjoying the rewrites.

I have hit a plateau at the moment. So to improve my craft. I am writing in other forms. I have my blog, my youtube channel, I am writing some short stories.
I have a number of screenplay I know aren’t good yet. So I doing all the above to get me to the level I need to be (in my mind).
None of these are big winners from a world point of view. I youtube has hundred not millions of views. But it is for me, not for the fame.

Mark G: Haha! I frequently change profile pictures. Someone told me my last shot was too welcoming. I should post the caption I'm not a mark! underneath.
Thanks for sharing and best of luck with the polishing. Reading articles, mailing lists and podcasts is a great way to gather valuable info, and if they're free, even better.

For me I am just enjoying the process of perfecting my art. There is only so much you can do but for me it's about consistency. I have found success in working on other writing endeavours, such as my blog, and looking at different forms of art to give me a different view of screenwriting.
I've been watching various YouTube videos discussing the craft and others that focus on film making (to give me a different insight in the film process). Been trying to improve building relationships and pitching. I'm pretty poor at the later in particular (it's difficult to write a one page pitch haha).
I find having a realistic mindset has helped me a lot in the writing process. Overthinking less with my writing. Taking in feedback without getting attached to my work. Learning as much as I can. Telling myself that there is no rush and that the journey is more valuable than the end goal as it takes a lot of effort to reach your goals. And most important of all building relationships with like minded people to make what is a solitary activity more sociable and enjoyable.

Martin: Nice job with your post. I've made some good writing friends over the past ten years. I met a gentleman at Trigger Street Labs when I first started submitting work and we corresponded for several years. He lives in Germany and he came to stay with my wife and we attended the Austin Film Festival together. We had a blast and I've met several other online acquaintances at AFF and Austin Revolution Film Festival. You need other writers to chat with because nobody else cares. Best of luck with your journey.

Kinda taking a break at the moment. I have one film releasing next month and one that's just hit the markets. I want to see how those perform and if I need to make any strategic pivots. I also want to be bursting to write when the next project comes along.

Well, I basically just took my first steps into the industry as a writer. However, soon I am planning to start pitching my screenplay to other industry people. Therefore, I am looking to find some approaches in the comments, thanks for this post Phillip!

Congrats on your success, everyone. Continue to learn the craft, build relationships, and learn the business side of the industry like RB said in the "Ask Me Anything" event two days ago. Peter Haase made this pie chart.

Development hell? I seem to remember a place that looks like that. Best of luck with your upcoming projects. Incidentally, I'm presently working with Angus Benfield, who did a film with Judy Norton.

Between naps, I concentrate on producing music promo videos for for local 'talented' musicians. I have no cast/crew available so I've given up producing shorts.
