My name is Josiah and my question is how do I get in the business? I have a degree, I have some experience within theater, film and television, but I want to gain more experience. I try networking, applying for film jobs, while also perfecting my craft and still nothing. What should I do?

Hey, Josiah Bhola Hillaire. Since you're a writer and you have experience in theater, film, and TV, you're already in the business. Keep networking, applying for film jobs, and perfecting your craft. It takes time. I also suggest reading the Stage 32 Blogs (www.stage32.com/blog) and checking out Stage 32's Education (www.stage32.com/education). They'll help you with networking, acting, and writing.

Hey Josiah! I don't know where you're located ... reach out to your local film commissioner's office, and Google production companies in your area. Local companies shoot anything from shorts to local commercials to corporate videos. So reach out to them and ask about PA gigs. Also write a few shorts that are 5 - 10 pages, and get together with local creatives like yourself!

Josiah Bhola Hillaire Hey, I commented on your similar post in another lounge. Check it out! The IIPG has a seminar coming up on Transitioning Into The Film Industry.
You're welcome, Josiah Bhola Hillaire.

Josiah Bhola Hillaire - does your college have a career office you can reach out to? I suggest making an appointment and they can help you connect with alumni who are in the biz!

Location is also a good thing. Where are you? If you're somewhere where there isn't a big film community, it can be a bit tougher. However, I'm sure there are people who are interested in film too. Find them and just shoot. It doesn't have to be the best production, but you have to start somewhere and just build from there.

I am sure you will get good advice here,Josiah. Don't know how old you are but if I were in my 20's again I would be out in L.A. in a heartbeat. Just see how it goes, You can always leave if it isn't for you.

Where do you live, Josiah? If there are no kind of film opportunities where you live, then start with shorts that you can do by yourself. Maybe there are businesses near you that need something filmed. Public access television?

Josiah, I don't blame you. Except for entertainment industry CA has less to offer every day, Its once attractive weather even seems to even be deteriorating,

There are lots of film opportunities in NY, Josiah Bhola Hillaire -- read the trades & start networking with NY filmmakers. I'd be happy to have such opportunities close at hand if I were young!
Jed Power - I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about. Is what spam?

You really should follow through with @Shellie Schmals suggestion, Josiah. If it's been 2 weeks, then go into the office to make a friendly check on if they have anything to share with you yet.

Maeve, Just that I get as many as 19 emails from different people saying they made a comment on a discussion I am following . They all have link to"coin base accoubt", whatever that is. I don't click on them and now just delete any stage32 emails over one that come from same person.

I haven't seen anyone mention anything like that in this thread, Jed -- I feel the same way about them & the realty ad spams that get in here. No good.

@Josiah You got practical & intellectual experience so make micro budget films with collaborators albeit tech maybe not perfect. Put your log lines here & get noticed. Off course being noticed doesn’t get projects kept but a portfolio of work never goes amiss.

Shellie Schmals I just want to make it as a screenwriter, filmmaker, etc., but conversations for me usually die when no one wants to give me a chance.

Josiah Bhola Hillaire I don't know why her name doesn't highlight when I type it in here, but why don't you try looking up Jennifer Carriere (a Stage32 member) and her script supervisor classes. https://www.scriptsupervisorceo.com/ That may be a perfect solution for you.
