Anything Goes : Rant before Nap. by J.J. Allen

Rant before Nap.

Hi guys!! Meanwhile, not sure if this is allowed, but my friends are sick of hearing it and figured I'd type my rant very loudly. I've written a few scripts and pretty amazing stories if you ask me. Two are pitched constantly and always met with amazing feedback from them. But it's like I'm still stuck. I don't know what to do or where to go. I hate my job. But I'm at the crossroads of going deeper into management or sticking it out and trying to find new ways to get this art off the ground. I'm not happy. And I'm not happy because I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be. I have 7 to 10 concepts just sitting. And I don't know what to do. I just want to write. It would make things easier for me if I knew even where to start. Even if i just got the chance to be a pa something on another set for a while. I'd be cool. At least I'd be one step closer. But I don't even know how to do that. The deeper I go into corporate space, the more i feel the creative in me fading. Ughhhh I think I have it all out. Im going to go get pie and lay down. Hope you guys are out there being incredible.

Hey J.J. Allen I feel your pain. First I wish you all the best of luck - I know you want to see your stories on the screen, and I wish that for you. I can sympathize with your situation. I got to the point where I asked executives, people in the business, and those who know "How can I do it on my own?" Needless to say I was met with scorn, given the silent treatment as if I wanted to take away someone's dinner, and just flat out misdirected.

Thankfully, I found my way, and if you are interested, I'll pass on what I've learned - I'm friend requesting you. This way you can have some free knowledge I wish I knew 5 years ago...that is if you want to take a chance and make your stuff on your own.

I hope I'm not yelled at for this post. Best to you.

Thanks my guy. I'm going to message you.

JJ, No idea your age but if I were in my 20's or 30's and unmarried I'd be in L.A. in a heartbeat for PA, or better, jobs and networking. Probably fun immersing yourself in that life, too. What would someone have to lose?

Congratulations on getting amazing feedback, J.J. Allen!

I feel and understand your frustration. I don't know how much networking you do, so this comment might not apply to you: Build relationships/network on here. That's the best way to get things moving in your screenwriting career. I get almost all of my jobs through Stage 32 by building relationships/networking. I'm not bragging. I'm just letting you know what can happen when you build relationships/network on here.

If you don't have pitch decks for your projects, I suggest making them (or hiring someone to make them). Writers having pitch decks is becoming more common, and pitch decks can lead to script requests.

Here's a great blog about becoming a PA: www.stage32.com/blog/breaking-in-what-it-takes-to-be-a-production-assist...

Hope this helps and hope you had a great nap. :D
