Screenwriting : Hand blasts? by Steve Cleary

Hand blasts?

Does anyone know what it's called when the final battle involves the hero exchanging blasts of electrity, lightning, laser beams, etc with the villain? you know, when they lock together and they're really struggling? Looked all over TV tropes but can't seem to find it. Thanks!

Hey, Steve Cleary. Do you mean when they're charging up their powers to shoot (blasts of electricity, lightning, laser beams, etc.)?

Steve Cleary

Maurice Vaughan It could involve that, but I'm referring to the long sustaining stalemate situation. TV tropes just describes the single blasts: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HandBlast

I know this is a goofy question to post here! I suppose I could track down the script for Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, Harry Potter etc.

Duh. I entered my question into ChatGPT and this is what they had to say:

The term you are referring to is often called a "standoff" or "energy clash." It's a popular trope in fantasy movies and other forms of media where the hero and villain engage in a dramatic confrontation where their powers, energy blasts, or weapons collide, resulting in a deadlock or stalemate. This intense face-off adds suspense and tension to the scene, as the characters' powers are evenly matched, and the outcome is uncertain until one of them gains the upper hand.

This is why I don't write anymore! I couldn't figure out how to just say "they're deadlocked in an energy clash" LOL

It's not a goofy question, Steve Cleary. You could write something like, "They zip through the sky, locked in a ferocious two-man war. They exchange energy blasts, electricity, lightning, and laser beams." Note: I'm not sure if your characters fly or not. Haha

Mano a mano, or man to man, is what it's called in real hand to hand combat, so maybe a mano a mano laser fight.
