Hard to Name Characters

I have a character I called Earpiece Guy in my script but he has since established quite the relationship with the main female character and I still can't seem to come up with a good name for him. So I guess they will just have to be Mr. and Mrs. Earpiece Guy.

Anybody have any tricks for naming hard-to-name characters?

Whitney Moore I like to name my characters based on their personalities (Example: A timid girl named Shy) or their physical appearances (Example: A muscular guy named Brian because Brian means strength).

Yes—a no-fail idea.

You’ve certainly broken your characters down with full character sheets. So read through the sheets out loud. Then, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and see who comes to mind. It’s going to be someone that you know or have met. You may have seen a movie with this character that you’re thinking of. But, someone that you have described with your written character will materialize. She will pop in to your head. Then you say the character’s name in a scene of your script and see how it feels – – that’s the catch. You need to SEE how it FEELS.

Even if that doesn’t directly resume your issue, you will come up with one that really resonates well. It works 100% of the time.

Hmmm. This should be fun. Earpiece guy. Earbud. Another name for an ear is auricular. Possibilities for a name…Auricubud, Budular, Ralucirua, etc. I have also found names with meaning, such as Brona which means sadness…fits my character. Augie is a name of a dog with big ears, 1960s cartoon character. Might be fun to call him Augie. Just some thoughts…

The habit of watching movies and series prompts to also reading through cast lists, I love coming up with names, and one amazing source of inspiration is reading the names of all these extraordinary people who make film (cinema/TV); mainly because one gets exposure to all sorts in a very condensed format... hope it helps =)

Whitney, I like to go to "The World Almanac," sports yearbooks, and even the Bible when I want to give handles to hard-to-name characters. (The Book helped me when I was trying to name some characters in both "Kitten on the Keys" and "Fuller's Folly.")

Here's wishing you all the VERY BEST!

My go to trick is to google something like, “Names meaning star.” You’ll find many websites that have people names and their meaning.

There are fun name generator sites, sometimes they spit out something good.
