I have actually felt like digital is more expensive, but for a different reason. It's ease of use allows for a lot time to be wasted. Back when we were shooting on film that focus puller better know what they're doing, and after each take, we didn't get to sit around and watch it. It makes movies take twice as long to film. Everyone's sitting around getting paid to watch the thirteenth take.
That being said, the digital camera allows for the democratization of filmmaking. Everyone walks around with a camera that would put the Red One to shame. It's an incredible time to be alive :-)
