Hi, everyone. I wanted to start a post that'll help Stage 32 members who are looking for distribution. What's one piece of advice that you have about finding distribution (or more than one)? Thanks.
I try to make marketing distribution even wider than the product itself. Lack of distribution is lack of recognition. I believe the ad-free mindset robs us of much-needed trailers for films and series alike! My family barely hears any new movies due to the current advertisings on old and new networks!
Great points, Sari Eliza. I like to watch ads for trailers on streaming. Sometimes I don't see ads for movies and shows on streaming and Twitter (X) until a movie or show is about to come out, and sometimes I never see the ads. Thanks for sharing.
Important and interesting! I want to learn more about distribution worldwide. Here in Taiwan, we often get indie films and they are distributed by smaller Taiwanese distribution companies. I guess every country has bigger or smaller distribution companies but who to contact? A friend closed his distribution deals at the Cannes Film Festival market place but there must be many other ways.
IMDb is a great resource for this. You have the best chance of making a meaningful connection to distributors if you approach ones that are appropriate for your project. To get some ideas on places to look, search for similar films to your own (genre, budget, cast level etc.) and go to the companies section on the movie’s IMDb page. Here you can see a list of distributors and the project’s sales agent (who’s territory will be listed as “worldwide”).
Thank you for fast reply! Yes, I know about IMdB but are all distributors worldwide on IMdB? Like for example if I have made a feature film and want distribution in Kenya, Indonesia or India, can I find suitable distributors on IMdB? And if I am an unknown indie producer, how can they know about me and my films? I guess many filmmakers are in the same situation. What about Mubi? I think film industry people in Europe and East Asia often are on Mubi. Can I also find distributors on Mubi?
