Happy IYW - What's Your Favourite 1950s sci-fi films

Hi, I'm Geoff. I'm a writer, director and sometimes producer of film. At other times I'm an author along with being a Stage32 Moderator - although perhaps the most immoderate moderator that you'll come across!

I love 1950s sci-fi films, especially the work of George Pal. (War of the Worlds, Destination Moon, When Worlds Collides) How about you? What's your favourite? AND DON'T FORGET TO ADD THE LINK TO THE TRAILER IN YOUR COMMENT.

Here's my choice: https://youtu.be/KcLaMyc4ecE?si=mbin1SahhMmo815h

Happy Introduce Yourself Weekend!

Maurice Vaughan

My favorite 1950s Sci-Fi film is "Them!" Geoff Hall. https://youtu.be/v4URRp39XOo?si=sJu_t2bHVIo2L4QM

Maurice Vaughan

I just looked up 1950s Sci-Fi films, Geoff Hall. I didn't know "The Fly" (1986) is a remake.

David Blaustein

Geoff Hall I LOVE that question. Mine is hardly a sci-fi classic, but it was one of my childhood obsessions: "Abbot and Costello Go To Mars" https://youtu.be/5an-EDaw81Q?si=RTH4g_bSJZykn6Bw

Geoff Hall

Yes, Maurice Vaughan Terror, Horror, Excitement, Mystery - in a word 'Them'! I love these old 1950s trailers. I think the first 30 minutes of this film is probably the best of all sci-fi films of this era. It's a classic, Maurice.

Maurice Vaughan

"When Worlds Collide" looks intense, Geoff Hall! The trailer looks incredible! I gotta check out the movie.

Geoff Hall

Oh my, David Blaustein as a kid I watched so many Abbot and Costello movies. Just watched the trailer. Perhaps Mum and Dad didn't allow me to watch this one. Too many scantily-clad ladies perhaps!

Geoff Hall

Maurice Vaughan George Pal was a master of the genre, IMO. It's well worth watching WWC, Maurice.

As for Them!, here's another clip. I forget the name of this actor, but I always loved his voice and his manner. And the little girl. What a wonderful talent.

Maurice Vaughan

Incredible acting, especially for a kid, Geoff Hall.

Geoff Hall

Maurice Vaughan agreed. I may just have to watch the film this weekend, when everyone's fast asleep in bed! Thanks for the prod, Maurice!

Sam Sokolow

So many great and fun sci-fi movies from the 1950's but I always get the biggest kick out of THE BLOB, plus you get a young Steve McQueen! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-heIT3L9Qg

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Geoff Hall. Thanks for the prod to watch "When Worlds Collides."

Geoff Hall

Ah, Sam Sokolow I have The Blob on BluRay. Loved it, but mostly because it’s a Steve McQueen film.

Asmaa Jamil

My favorite is The Ten Commandments. It is such a great movie and I still watch it whenever it's on.

Dustin Richardson

It's always good to see your posts, Geoff Hall! For me, it's Creature from the Black Lagoon and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Dustin Richardson

Yes, Sam Sokolow and Geoff Hall! I had a great time watching THE BLOB for the first time! I've never seen the reboots. The 88 one looks gross.

Leonardo Ramirez

One of my favorite questions, Geoff Hall - FORBIDDEN PLANET

Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxQ9GG6hUDM

Geoff Hall

Dustin Richardson ah, Dustin thank you. Two classics of the genre there. Body Snatchers with Kevin McCarthy’s famous scene. “Help, help. They’re coming! They’re coming!”

Nick Phillips

If we're going with that era, I'd have to say the Blob (1958). Great 50's sci-fi that left such an impression on me as a kid, and it course gave us the first big role for none other than the King of Cool himself, Steve McQueen!

Jenean McBrearty

The Day the Earth Stood Still: Klaatu/Michael Renni. Of course, ETs transformed human DNA....he speaks English.

Daniel Velasco Cajias

Hi Geoff! Nice to meet you!

Geoff Hall

Nick Phillips oozing into a theatre near you! Love it.

Geoff Hall

Leonardo Ramirez yeah, I love the sound design on FP, Leonardo.

Geoff Hall

Walter Horsting thanks Walter. Another film in my DVD collection. It’s good to see you on the IYW.

Geoff Hall

Daniel Velasco Cajias Great to see you too, Daniel!

Geoff Hall

Jenean McBrearty I love the way Klaatu speaks with an impeccable English accent. Michael Rennie was such a great actor.

Sam Rivera

It's great to meet you Geoff Hall! I love George Pal!

Ashley Renee Smith

Happy IYW, Geoff Hall! Mine is probably the original War of the Worlds!

Linwood Bell

The Day The Earth Stood Still. Me and my sister, Janet watched it a few times on tv as children and enjoyed gettin' scared. :).

Pat Alexander

Hey Geoff, great to hear from you! It's 60s but I've always loved Steve Sekely's "The Day of the Triffids" film!

Geoff Hall

Ashley Renee Smith yes, a classic George Pal movie!

Geoff Hall

Pat Alexander hi Pat, yes, another great movie and the opening in the hospital ward, inspired Alex Garland’s writing for the opening of ‘28 Days Later’. Eerie dystopian stuff!

Geoff Hall

Linwood Bell hi Linwood, oh my and oh yes! I too remember watching it on a small screen as a kid. It has such great atmosphere. The music too is excellent; what's not to love?

Geoff Hall

Hi Sam Rivera here we are, the two members of the George Pal Fan Club!
