Screenwriting : Vertical Script? by Jed Power

Jed Power

Vertical Script?

What is a vertical Script, p[lease? I guess I better not apply, if I don't even know what a "Vertical Script Writer" is!

Maurice Vaughan

I think vertical scripts are used to make YouTube Shorts videos and TikTok videos, Jed Power.

E Langley

Ironically, what it is became part of another post: "Layout that pulls the reader's eye down the page." Compare that to dense Actions that force the reader's eye to scan left to right - Horizontal Scripts.

Christopher Phillips

Jed Power Vertical screenwriting makes reading easier on the page. It's the process of breaking up large paragraphs of description and making short, snappy sentences with whitespace between the sentences.

Example:

Vertical screenwriting is easier on the page.

Sentences should be short and snappy, which will make the page flow better.

Include whitespace between the sentences.

E Langley

How about that!

William Martell

What Langley and Philips said. Less dense writing, shorter sentences, and keeping things moving down the page rather than across the page. Read a few Walter Hill screenplays to see an extreme version.

Francisco Castro

Yes, William Martell, read a Walter Hill script. Hill's STREETS OF FIRE is a fantastic read.

Ben Henning

That's so interesting! I didn't realize that was even a thing. So I suppose it would the effect of making the actual product faster-paced with snappy dialogue?

Dan MaxXx

22-year old Shane Black wrote the modern screenplay format with Lethal Weapon.

Ben Henning

@Dan thanks for sharing!

Jeffrey B. Wayne

I concur with @Mauricio. From the job reqs I've been seeing they're 60-80 90 sec (1.5 page) episodes. Sure teaches you to make your scenes snappy.

Jill Gambaro

I've been approached on one of these as well @Mauricio @Jeffrey and was told the same thing. Has anyone actually written one?
