Amanda Toney thanks for the list, Amanda. I would add a book to that last - Gaston Bachelard’s ‘The Poetics of Space’. It’s a great read and also it helps to understand the psychology of space and helps this director to understand the psychology of each room and setting.

Here are 5 other books I can recommend - focussing more on the independent filmmaker aspects of the job: "Spike Lee's Gotta Have It" by Spike Lee, "sex, lies and videotape" by Steven Soderbergh, "George Lucas: A Life" by Brian Jay Jones, "Rebel Without a Crew" by Robert Rodriguez, and "Fast, Cheap, and Under Control" by John Gaspard. Each provides excellent in-depth, useful advice across a variety of genres.
