Filmmaking / Directing : The Forever War by Geoff Hall

The Forever War

This has all the feel of a classic that was never made!

“After the success of Alien and Blade Runner, Ridley Scott set out to adapt The Forever War, Joe Haldeman’s legendary anti-war sci-fi novel. It had the potential to be a landmark film - spanning centuries, galaxies, and the psychological toll of endless conflict.”

If Ridley Scott has lost interest, who do you think should take up the reins? The theme seems to me, to be in the realm of a James Cameron story.

I’d never watched the animated show, how about you?

Maurice Vaughan

I think this is my first time hearing of The Forever War, Geoff Hall. The plot of the novel sounds thrilling! Yeah, definitely James Cameron.

Geoff Hall

Maurice Vaughan Perhaps we could start a JC campaign for the forever war, Maurice. The animated series looks cool too, but I can’t find anything about it.

Maurice Vaughan

Setting up a JC campaign might work, Geoff Hall. I've seen campaigns like it. I'm looking forward to reading the novel and seeing the animated series. They could make a video game too. I think the story would work well for a game.

Geoff Hall

Maurice Vaughan well, Maurice, there’s a graphic novel of The Forever War. I may check that out when I have the time, as well as a series of short stories. Yes, a video game would be awesome!

Lindbergh E Hollingsworth

Wonderful story! Scott would've been a great for it. Don't know whom would be good to direct now. Have to give that some thought ...

Robert Russo

If you enjoy military sci fi you should read "Armor" by John Steakley. Amazing book.

Yaşar Taşbaş

This project definitely has the emotional scope and visual potential of something like Blade Runner or Children of Men. While James Cameron would certainly bring an epic scale, I believe Denis Villeneuve could absolutely nail the emotional restraint and psychological depth, similar to what he achieved with Arrival and Dune. If this ever gets resurrected, I hope the focus remains on the personal cost of the conflict, not just the spectacle. I think that's where true science fiction lives. Furthermore, I don't think Denis Villeneuve has yet shown his full potential with the Dune series; I still believe he can do even better.

Geoff Hall

Yaşar Taşbaş that’s a good call, Yaşar, but I believe Denis Villeneuve has nailed it with Dune 1 and 2.
