Congratulations on Elimination Strain getting into the Austin Film Festival, Christopher Wells! Hope you and everyone have a great time and make connections at Austin!
Oh wow, how WONDERFUL that your script is being chosen! Every writer dreams of having their work noticed and brought to life, and it sounds like yours has hit that sweet spotlight
Christopher Wells Great job! Atta-Boy!!! that’s something you should be proud of! I’m going. this is my first trip to AFF. I submitted a pilot and a feature, and the pilot is a second-rounder, so I’m stoked too. I’d love to meet you and hope to find you there. great work again, Christopher!
A lot of people have been asking me about my script so I figured this may be helpful.
So even before my final script was finished, I shot a proof of concept because I knew even if I made changes to the script, I know the tone and pacing I want to achieve and I also knew that the POC could be a stand alone as well.
The POC is pretty much the first scene though since the production I added a scene before this that sets things up later on and made some other tweaks (as one usually does). This is the link to the POC - https://www.kpictures.com/elimination-strain
I think it's in the best interest for any screenwriter to shoot a POC to help move the project along. After I shot this I didn't really work on the script the way I wanted due to other obligations. Fast forward a couple of years, a friend of mine, two days before the late deadline for Austin encouraged me to submit my script. She read an earlier draft and liked it. I on the other hand knew it needed a lot of work and I hadn't looked at my notes or script in a while so the thought of having to find my starting point was so daunting...But I didn't have time to overthink things. I had 2 days. I stayed up late, tweaked as much as I could, even ran out of time, literally submitted less than perfect script 2 minutes before the final deadline. I didn't feel confident because I didn't get time to tweak the last 5 or so pages and I saw a major typo and I was so angry at myself for not giving myself enough time and it would appear I just wasted X amount of dollars to send an unfinished script to a prestigious festival. What the hell was I thinking?
I'm pleasantly surprised my body horror script was accepted. I tend to have a social commentary in my work and this is a mirror held up to society, dealing with conspiracy theories and the danger when someone very powerful believes in them. When I say powerful I don't mean political power though that is an element.
I did a similar thing with my feature film The Luring, now distributed by Indie Rights. I shot the first scene and used that with my pitch deck and that's what I'll be doing with Elimination Strain.
Stephen Barber Congrats as well. That's very cool. I'll be there October 23rd to October 28th. Austin is one of the best film festivals for writers so getting in is a huge deal. The way you leverage your script is now so wide open because anyone who has a script in Austin gets the attention of investors.
Maurice Vaughan Thank you. My friend who encouraged me to submit has been there 2 times and is going a third time so I'll be in good company. Will you be attending?
Lauren Hackney Thank you! I was surprised due to the script not being fully tweaked the way I wanted it to be so I'm a big surprised. Have you ever been? This will be my first time.
Congrats to you, and what an exciting path your script has taken! I will be there Oct 23-26th. My first screenplay "First Person" made it to the 2nd Round, and I promised myself that I'd go if it placed at all. I'm a little nervous. Kind of an introvert and not great at selling myself. Would love to meet up any fellow Stage32 writers. Cheers!
Joohee Muromcew First off I love Boston, The Luring (a feature I did) was shot in VT and played in a town in Massachusetts so I have a love for the area and the people. I'd love to meet up, I'm sure we'll be attending the same events. I got a producers pass and plan on attending a ton of events. I just created a WhatsApp for those attending the Austin Film Festival so we can stay in touch, network, support each other, and meet up. I've been creatively challenged after hearing so many success stories. Hearing stories like yours amps me up to get it done! Thanks Christopher Wells
You're welcome, Christopher Wells. I won't be attending, but hopefully one day!
