Hey Stage 32 community! I’m based in Los Angeles and I’m actively working to build my on-set experience as a Production Assistant. I’m a writer, director, and producer developing my own project, and I want to understand how a set actually runs from the ground up. Paid or unpaid I just want to get out there meet some cool creatives and help them build their projects while learning how to do this myself. I’m a single father with a WFH job. I don’t have all the time in the world but I do want to spend the free time I have getting on set.
I’d love to hear from those of you who’ve been there: How did you land your first PA gig? Are there specific types of productions (commercials, student films, indie features) that are more open to newer faces? Any LA-specific tips or people worth connecting with?
I’m serious about the craft and willing to put in the work. I didn’t go to film school but I’m hoping get a real world education by working with those in the community who need an extra hand on set. Grateful for any advice/information I can get.
