Back when all I did was write screenplays, and I struggled against the mantra, "Don't direct from the page", I often felt that it wouldn't hurt anything if I put a little sump'n-sump'n in there now and then. I took it as more of a "guideline" than a "rule". Now I get it. As a producer/director, I have crew who mean well, but go beyond what they have been recruited for, and dive into directing from their own chairs. This not only makes my job harder by forcing me to pull them into what I had planned in the first place, but makes things awkward when the people I work with are often my friends. I have to be the big, bad Dictator. I will never again dismiss or take for granted any tried and true guidelines. But I won't compromise my vision for a film, either. So I guess this is part rant, part humble acknowledgement, and part #headdesk. Ouch. The truth hurts, lol.
