Hey Alle, if you want to impart your well-worn wisdom about screenplay competitions, why don't you start your own thread instead of shitting on someone's good news thread. Congrats Lendell; keep up the good work!
Don't worry everyone, I didn't take Alle's comments to heart, it went in one ear and out the other. I still would have done the contests, and just leave it in God's hands. At least I had the courage to to try it in the first place.
I think one can and SHOULD enjoy victories in writing, both great and small. If nothing else, making it to a finals level serves as a confirmation that your work isn't half bad and that you're on the right track. However, I think what Alle says is true to an extent. I don't think she means to undermine Lendell's accomplishment by pointing out that some contests are bogus money grabs. But implying that contests are no big deal and that they won't do anything for you just isn't true. I made the Finals in PAGE a few years back and got read by Trancas International Films. In addition to serving as a measuring stick of how good your work is, making the Finals in a top competition CAN get you noticed. When pitching agents and producers, having a 'Winner' or 'Finalist' badge in a legit contest can be the difference between getting read and getting ignored. Why? Because it tells them that someone other than you and your Aunt Tilly think it's a good script. One connection I made told me he appreciates that I run my work through contests beforehand because it saves him time and gives him an edge when seeking out funding. Check out Movie Bytes for contest info and how contestants rate them. I tend to stick with PAGE and StoryPros because they're legit and offer something besides 'will submit your work to agents and producers' if you win. I also look at who will be judging, where they're from, what they’ve done, etc. ~ Even though I made the Finals this year I doubt I will enter the Hollywood Screenplay contest again for a couple of reasons: 1) after entering I had no idea when Finalists and Winners would be announced and never got so much as an email letting me know; I couldn’t even find it on their website anywhere. 2) if you’re lucky enough to be a winner and you want a paper certificate to frame you have to BUY it. That’s right, you pay to enter the contest and then if you WIN you pay them some more if you want to commemorate your victory. Very odd, to say the least. Check out Movie Bytes for the 411 on contests. I’ve said this before: I enter contests more to see if the pros think my work is good enough to pass muster. I can say that winning is great, but knowing my work is among the best is the greater reward. Best of luck to all!
I noticed that too Derek about Hollywood Screenplay contest asking us to buy the certificate and the plaque. They should at least pay for this. Derek are you going to the award show, I will not be going?
I don't have to answer that question Alle, I am just enjoying the moment. I will say that I won't continue to enter contests, it was a one time thing for me. At least I know someone other than uncle Buck liked my screenplay.
Alle if you are not going to post positive, create you own trend and stay out of my positive posts. If you want to interview someone, get a talk show. I don't answer to anyone but God. Do you post negative like this to everyone success or just me?
Alle, sorry, not even a Christian, here, but you should have sense enough not to bring God into this. That was on-purpose rude and didn't have a thing to do with the posting. Lendell's one of the most supportive people on here. Maybe take a lesson. He also doesn't drop names, or work what people are saying about him into the vast majority of comments he makes. Stop. Whatever you're trying to achieve on this forum, you're really undermining yourself. Just the truth. You can learn by it, or not; all the same, to me. I really think you have something valuable to bring to this forum, but, wow, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Gratuitous and mean, that God comment.
I usually try to ignore trolls but that's a new low even for Alle. Meanwhile, CONGRATULATIONS LENDELL!! May there be more success heaped your way! Good karma for GOOD PEOPLE!
Alle, you are so unpopular here right now that if Stage 32 was a community held up against a horde of zombies you'd likely be thrown as a sacrifice. And the sad truth is the zombies would probably throw you back. Please drop all the bullshit and bitterness. Come clean and embrace the forum as the vulnerable and struggling person you really are. Because we can all relate to that person and help them be part of a supportive and loving community.
CJ, I agree that everybody should get another chance but Alle does not want or need to be embraced by the community. She doesn't consider any of us her peers, for she believes (and frequently tells us so) she's on a higher level. Also after all the exaggerations, wild claims and name-dropping with little to back it up, nobody believes anything she says now, and trust once lost is hard to regain.
I hear you, Anton. I just think that, if Alle could find it in herself to just drop the facade and humbly open up about whatever is causing this hysterical behaviour, we could find it in ourselves to forgive and move on. There's clearly an ambitious filmmaker in there who needs a lot of help on many levels.
Keeping in mind that this is Lendell's thread, I wd be thrilled at Alle coming around, but that's in her hands. There are some bits of her experience that wd help any aspiring filmmaker, I'm fairly sure. I, and all of us frankly, just stop taking it in when I have to "listen" to how grandly other people think of her (accepting everything she says is true in at least a metaphorical sense, just move on from it and stop beating us over the head with biographical wonderment). -- It's a constant pitch, and there's a reason why Salesmen are an unpleasant stereotype. Alle, you don't need to bare your soul to anyone to gain back trust (or care about our trust, lol), but you do need to slow down on the namedropping and approbation from "names" for anyone but the very very new to take you seriously. Unfortunately, most of us kind of feel that you're purposely playing solely to those uninformed. -- It doesn't mean it's true, it just means that that's the natural result of how you're presenting. By all means, you're your own person and will make your own decisions. No chance in the world I fully understand what you're trying to accomplish. But this has been going on ever since I've been on the site and I'd think you'd appreciate an open hand rather than a snide comment, and a possible way out. -- Again, you're a grown up; do what you want. I think you have plenty to offer, here. Just not by "selling" your persona. -------- Lendell, my apologies. It just seems like the opportune thread to get this "out there" as snide comments from folk haven't had any lasting effect, and it's a very public issue, so PMs don't seem to be the answer (and I'm tired & a clod, so may well be handling it wrong. But that God comment was outta line, so I'm doing it in "public."). -- I somehow think you're the type of guy who would be pleased if a site-betterment-change happened on your thread, anyway. My apologies stand, tho, and my congratulations, again, on your placement. Nice job!
I am communicating with a lady that is just getting started in the TV and Movie business, I will keep everyone up to date on if she picks up my faith based screenplay. I am working on writing my next two screenplays also.
