Realities of the Filmmaking World

Hello all here at Stage 32. I am a fairly active member of Film Specific (not trying to plug that site here by the way), and I had posted a comment that got a lot of people talking - which is a good thing. This is a much smaller (and paid subscription) site focusing on filmmaking, but I thought I wo...

'The' Assemble Edit... is it the most painful part?

We're halfway through the assemble on our latest feature and - although there's light at the end of the tunnel - it sometimes feels so painful! Do other people find this? Any coping mechanisms apart from booze and just powering through haha?

Benjamin Cambridge

Happy tweaking Matt.

Scott Warren

That's awesome dude! Best of luck!

I thought I saw 'The Light at The End of The Tunnel', but it was just some bugger with a torch (flash-light), coming to give me more work!

Shaun O'Banion

In almost every case, your first assemble will leave you thinking, "My God, what have we done? We killed it. It's ruined." You just have to understand that it's going to evolve and it will get better...

Plugins

What's the best plugins to use during editing, using Adobe CS6?

Simon © Simon

Head over to ClassonDemand.com and buy a year subscription to the classes. Best deal out there. See when you get to 301 Final Project. About 800 lessons and a solid year of 5 - 7 hours a day! Then you...

To comment on the tutorials that Simon mentioned - spot on. I have been a member of Lynda.com and wow, I honestly could not have done most of the work we are doing in post without these fantastic tuto...

@ Matt Cramer is a gas... I like his how to's in the beginnings. Too funny! Like a pull away from a parking lot into outerspace. First thing you need is a balloon and some fishing line. Oh don't forget to turn the camera on first. LOL!

Georgia Hilton

I agree Matt Cramer offers excellent, helpful and fun how-to tutorials... I can't recommend them enough.

Color Grading Options

I had just commented on a post by Derek Nickell, so this is a bit of a repeat, but my editor and I (I am the writer/director/lots of other hats) are looking for a color grading solution and thought I could get some thoughts/comments here on the board. My question is this: Speedgrade or DaVinci? We h...

Okay, so I guess I just answered my own question. Speedgrade it is. Why? Just way more intuitive. We (my editor and I) hooked up the absolutely awesome Tangent Elements control surfaces this morning a...

With your Adobe based workflow, Speedgrade is nice because you can move back and forth between Premiere and SG with your Premiere project file and see your color grades in Premiere without rendering intermediate footage (via the Lumetri effect).

Color Grading and Correction Reel

Hello everyone! I put together a new coloring reel of a few projects (features, shorts, commercials, music videos and industrial) I have been the colorist on. Hit me up if you need some correction or want a completely stylized look for your project! My rates are on a sliding scale and I can work rem...

Hello Derek. Great reel. I see you grade in DaVinci and Speedgrade. We have access to both and just purchased the Tangent Elements control surfaces (that will likely go on eBay after we complete the p...

Buying a new camera

I'm about to buy a new camera, I've got a limited budget max 2.500€ (more or less 2.800$) there are 3 option: Canon 7D Canon 5D II or Canon 5D III used. What are your impressions? What type of film do you take it with?

Gigi Belle

thank you Matt and Mark, i'll check them out

Just to chime in again.... The issue with buying a lens is that it further embeds you in the manufacturers ecosystem. From this discussion, it is clear you are not yet set on a destination technically...

And agree with Mike again! I/we decided long ago NOT to make a camera purchase (other than the aforementioned GH2s) simply because the technology is ever changing. Gone are the days when you could buy...

Oh and yes, we have PL mount adapters for our GH2s. That Angie 25-250 looks pretty silly when attached to the camera body (the lens itself is probably pushing three feet in length and maybe 15-18 poun...

And, the Canon c-series DO have a PL lens variant. If you want to go Canon and have some hope of lens longevity. All of this talks against an EOS upgrade and for rental while saving for a 'proper' bod...
