Thanks, Richard. Keeping a close eye on the intern stuff. HUGE repercussions for this industry and many others are at bay.
It is certainly an interesting debate, but win or lose, won't these interns now become box office poison? Will they get on with another studio?
I really hope the interns who were brave enough to take a stand still have a future in the industry!!
I kind of doubt it. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. But when an apprentice takes the company giving them a chance to get into that industry to court thus the result is to increase production costs to the...
Expand commentI kind of doubt it. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. But when an apprentice takes the company giving them a chance to get into that industry to court thus the result is to increase production costs to the point it will affect the industry and how movies may be made in the future (less staff to make the costs more affordable)...do the math. On the other side of the argument, certainly if the interns were used well beyond their expectations of an intern...then maybe those people who used them that way would receive the scorn of the industry. Either way, it's a damnable situation and it will affect more than just the film and theater industries. Trades, professional sports, oil and gas, pretty much every industry has some form of internship. Work experience programs in high schools may also be affected down the road. If there is no longer an intern position -- that everyone needs to be paid, you can bet experience will trump internship.
It's amazing how such a simple item can capture the essence of a conflict....
Dave, I completely agree. This was taken at the Stanley Kubrik exhibit at LACMA and this was the actual prop used in FULL METAL JACKET. Amazing. The way they showcased it I found it oddly beautiful and tortured at the same time.
Hi Andrea, a large percentage of the props & costumes used in Full Metal Jacket were genuine Army surplus items, and as such saw active service in Vietnam......knowing this fact makes the exhibit even...

Love LACMA by the way.....I would have loved to have been able to see James Turrell’s Retrospective!

I live in little old England, not far away from Falmouth as it happens, went to watch WWZ last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a film maker myself and in the last two years have started writing and making short films, and ultimately trying to achieve my goal of working in the film industry, but as an un-qualified person I am finding it very difficult to find a way in, especially in the sheltered part of the country I live in. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated, Thanks. Tim

Expand commentHi Tim, You are already in the industry Tim, you are writing, and making films.....you are in a very strong position to progress your career!! The most valuable advice I could give you is to never give up your dreams. You've got to keep plugging away, and apply for every job you can in the business, regardless of how minor the role is. A D.O.P friend of mine started off his career as a runner/tea boy......he's now one of the most respected cinematographers in the industry!! The opportunities are our there, regardless of your geographical location......you CAN do it Tim!! Very best wishes with your career. Peace. Dave
Hi Tom, Loved your blog!!.....talk about living life at full throttle!! Peace & very best wishes Dave
Regarding the film studio/film production 'intern' issue.....my opinion it's taking advantage, and should stop! Studios should pay a fair days pay for a fair days work.....just my opinion:)

Hi Peggy, You CAN do it!! If you wish hard enough your dream WILL come true!! Peace, and positive energy Dave

Expand postThanks so much for taking the time to share the insight Dave. As an emerging filmmaker/director, I soak this stuff up like a sponge. I'm constantly seeking out the "behind the scenes" on DVDs and gravitating towards literature, videos, posts and jumping in on others projects etc. During the shoot of The Lost Souls, we were filming in Scott Hicks back yard (so to speak). We went to the newsagent down the road to copy more continuity sheets only to find out that we'd just missed him! Working on a film IS very hard work at times but such an amazing experience. Days can turn into nights and into days, crew and actors buzzing about all over the place, logistics of location changes and it goes on. Primal Wound, my first feature, is about to take off and it's very exciting. If you happen to have some spare time I'd value some tips which you think to be golden nuggets in film creation. Great job with WWZ Dave and very best wishes for your career ahead.

I find it quite motivating to be able to know what happens behind the scenes in a blockbuster. Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Dave! Although I didn't like the title, I'm curious about watching the movie. One quick question... What time was Brad's and your wakeup calls?
Hi Felipe, Im really pleased you enjoyed the blog. I'm not sure what Brad's call time was, but mine was - 4.30am breakfast, 5am in wardrobe/make up. Peace Dave
Man, I can't sleep in my bed to wake up that early... Was there any uncomfortable couch on your camarin? One I could feel cold and that hearts the back? Seriously I think someone is sabotaging my alarm clock

And the fact , whether you are a major "A" list actor or an extra, you pretty much get on with each and doing the work within a time schedule. This is an excellent example of professional and courteous behaviour from Brad Piit, who has not let celebrity get to his head. He demonstrates another important fact, which is everyone is there to do a job. Thanks for sharoing your on set insights on a big budget movie Dave. Performer, director and educator - Goran Banyai
Also, it's great to read about how you began a relationship and as a result had a baby based on your experience in this film "village community". Kind regards Goran
It was an amazing film to work on....there really was an amazing vibe:)
