Since graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2005 with an Advanced Diploma of Performing Arts (Acting), Melanie has worked consistently as a professional actor in theatre, film and television in Australia and overseas. As a writer, her journey is just beginning.
Some theatrical highlights as an actor include A Streetcar Named Desire (Blanche) and Dancing at Lughnasa (Maggie) for the Bakehouse Theatre Company; Twelfth Night (Viola) for Shakespeare SA; The Glass Menagerie (Laura), The Shape of Things (Evelyn), and Yellow Moon (Holly) for Black Swan State Theatre Company; and The Sexual Life of Savages (Alice) for Skylight Theatre Company Los Angeles.
Melanie’s television work includes Ladies in Black (ABC); Gymnastics Academy: A Second Chance (Netflix); The Tourist (Stan/BBC1/HBO Max); Pine Gap (Netflix/ABC); Lockie Leonard (Nine Network), All Saints (Seven Network), Sea Patrol (Nine Network), My Place (ABC), and Showtime’s miniseries Cloudstreet.
Her film work includes The Stranger, Awoken, A Second Chance: Rivals!, Little Sparrows, Area 407, and Terms of Service, for which she was nominated for Best Actress by Maverick Movie Awards, Los Angeles.
Melanie has received several awards for acting including the Best Actress Award (WA Theatre Guild) for The Shape of Things, and Best Actress at the WA Screen Awards for the short film Trinkets.
Melanie wrote and produced two episodes of a web series, "Couples Counselling", which led to her eligibility for SAG-AFTRA in Los Angeles. She also co-wrote three episodes of "Grind", another Los Angeles based web series.
Her first pilot script, "Dischordant", won the LA Female Film Festival screenplay award in April 2024, placed as a Semifinalist in Raindance Film Festival’s script competition (2023) and Final Draft’s Big Break competition (2023), a Quarterfinalist in the ScreenCraft TV pilot competition (2024), the Emerging Writers' Screenplay Competition (2024), and the Creative Screenwriting Unique Voices competition (2024). An earlier draft placed on the Monte Miller Award's longlist in 2023, and it has also placed on Coverfly's Red List, currently ranking in the top 2% of projects.
Her short film script “Charley Bird” placed as a Semifinalist in the Outstanding Screenplays Short Film script competition (2023) and is ranked in the top 17% of short film projects on Coverfly.
Melanie is always working on several projects, which currently include another pilot and a feature film. She recently completed Screen POD 2023, an initiative of Screen Canberra, and took part in Pitch Fest where her scripts received interest from several top production companies.
