To a certain extent both Spielberg and Lucas have actively participated in the implosion with bloated budgets of their own. Are they suggesting that they could not secure financing? I think the problem is that they are incapable of making smaller, personal, films because they themselves are not interested making those kinds of films. If Spielberg brought Lincoln to TWC or HBO it would have been a smaller film and it would have been as good given the talent involved and the story it told. We can't lay the cost blame exclusively on the talent. Scope and cost of production in Hollywood are insane and filmmakers don't need $250 M to get moviegoers into theaters. Studios need bigger global franchises to support their own bloated cost structure and executive salaries. It time to get back to grass roots and rebuild a more sustainable industry that is a more inclusive, diverse, and innovative industry where less is more and great storytelling is the first objective.

I had a discussion with a film maker friend of mine on the Sony lot in L.A. last year where we were predicting this inevitabililty. The movie industry will go the way of the record industry. For many of the reasons discussed here, it was bound to happen. The record industry made the same mistakes and had their collective asses handed to them. The power is now in the hands of the artists who create new ways to distribute and promote their product without a big company behind them. The result: better music, better movies, better entertainment that I, for one, feel a little better giving my money to.

This has been a long time coming. I welcome the death of the studio system. It discourages innovation and creativity and the system is canabalizing it's own business. This is good news for everyone and will mean the resurgence of a new cottage industry for theatrical and digital distribution that won't be monopolized by Hollywood. The means of both production and distribution will shift back to artists and entrepreneurs that actually care about things like narrative, character and diverse content in a global market .

Has anyone had a chance to shoot with the Black Magic Cinema Camera? I'm thinking of pre-ordering the Pocket Cinema model, or perhaps the Production model if I can work out the funds for the body and a set of lenses.
