Does it hurt your chances to be taken as a serious actor if you continue to do "extra" work? Has an extra ever been "discovered?"

The 2nd annual Portland Previews 2015 is an incredible opportunity to see what is being created for film and TV in Portland and Oregon. From all genres, the best scripts and films will be previewed. New this year, the “1st 10 Pages” Scriptwriting Contest puts each script to the real-world test that it will have to survive to be produced. The winning scripts for short, feature, and TV will be read by professional actors at the Table Reads on the first night of this two-day event. This list of talented professionals include actor Greg James, who recently appeared with Reese Witherspoon in WILD and Kristina Haddad, who acted in Adam Sandler’s film You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. I was listening to an Office Ladies podcast where Angela Kinsey talks about her time as an extra on 90210. Experience as an extra on set can be the easiest way to learn set etiquette which in turn, you can use when you have a bigger role on set.
I would say YES if you do it instead of acting.
I don't take any non speaking roles, no reality TV either.
