About Derek

A native of the North East of England, Derek started acting at his local theatre group in Sunderland, after which he made his way to London. Whilst there he took many roles, including Eilert Loevborg in Hedda Gabler (Henrik Ibsen), Professor Higgins in Pygmalion, Adolphus Cussins in Major Barbara (George Bernard Shaw), and Stanley in Death of a Salesman (Arthur Miller).
In the early 1980’s, Derek moved on to the USA and studied with the acclaimed improvisation tutor, Viola Spolin, in New York. He has put the knowledge he gained there when working as a tutor for Yorkshire based groups such as Northern Star Acting, YAFTA and Central Stage Acting.
Derek made his London debut as a Director with Educating Rita (Willy Russell) and followed that up with Middle Aged Spread (Roger Hall) and Anton Chekov’s, The Proposal.
Derek has also appeared in many film and television productions. He was seen at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in the short film, Dark Solitude. (Skipper). He has also appeared in several small screen productions including Coronation Street, Shameless, Cold Blood, and Casualty 1907. During 2013 Derek worked in the USA where he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor award at the 2013 Filmed in Utah awards for his portrayal of Frank Sarvis in the Amazon Prime TV series ‘Day Zero’.
Derek has written three full-length plays, Run For Home and Bad Moon Rising, which are adaptations of books by crime novelist, Sheila Quigley and Snatched From Home based on a novel by Graham Smith. His first radio play, Murder Mystery Murder was recorded in February 2015.
