Hi Juliet, Sorry I can not join any of you ther but Aiustralia is a long way away from you. But can I ask you to help me by telling five people about my new childrens book? Mary Sumeridge Beginning is the name of it and it is coming out at the end of June this year. Published by Alpha Wolf. It is a story about a little girl who with the help of her Granny Ann and Poppy the troll go on an adventure to save a ghost child from an evil witch. There is lots of magical creatures and a whole lot more in the series. At the end of the first book Mary finds a treasure that is like no other. The web page has Poppy the troll flying on Willys the seagulls back and he is pulling a sign with the name of the first book on it. It is a really cool animation which Bill Smith did for me. So any help would be great it you just tell a few friends about the book for me. Mary Filmer author.

Hey Juliete, what about the Pool Bar at the Hollywood Roosevelt? It's pretty big to accommodate a large group, outside and there are plenty of tables and chairs too. The only thing is scheduling as sometimes they have private events, but this could work?

Do Palm Springs the week before Cannes. We have Casinos for decent price accommodations and parking, not to mention an airport that is small yet INTL

I wont be doing any events or get to gethers untill at least August time...i am on a feature for July..and will probably be somewhere in Hollywood like a Bar/Pub something like that.. AND most probably like a Mon or Tuesday...MJ will look into the Hollwood Roosevelt Pool Bar...but may check prices of drinks that they are not too expensive ok....I have to admit i have not been there yet.

Formosa's always fun and very Hollywood divey. I don't think it's pricey.

I hate seeing adverts that i have just missed...I am a Sound Recordist .....have only just seen this but alas its too late to help out. However if by chance you need cover again or Sound on another project I would love to help. Have my own equipment.

I would get a get some equipment, i.e.; Boom and zoomH4N, at first and do a lot of short films, then commercials, and then, industrials, and doc,s I would work for free at first, and then get paying gigs, always handing out the card and emailing thanks to the producers and network network and network, then most producers eventually find that your courteous and kind on set, an know your job , when working on films as a PA, always volunteer as set p.a. and help out the sound crew, lead, boom, mixer, making sure they all have your card at the end o day, no matter what market you work in you have to be available and have the utmost responsibilities of showing up on time. then make sure that they have your email and phone or web sites- that you get gigs from, then I would invest into couple of Lavs, and SD card hard drive recorders, and sony or shure or fostex mixer. let the equipment and rental houses that you have such gear, I buy my equipment from B and H in Newyork, so have all the connectors cables and have a cell phone, join a lot of groups at first then you can let those go after the first year, as more and more people know that you have chops to doing good sound job, , take some classes on sound at junior college, and scan all the craigslistings ,call boards at gear houses, and meet ups let everyone know your cell phone and website/email if they work in the film biz if you don't have those yet, then i would get to working on them, good luck its a hard life! and the most important when your doing Music videos wear earplugs you will get tinnitus

With your years of on set experience you have made some excellent connections. Now is time to use them. As you know, it’s the mixer who usually hires his team so you need to contact the mixers you have met on set in the past. Let them know that your goal is to work your way up. Start keeping track of your worked hours for your IERA. You have a leg up on people who don’t have your years of on set experience.

Hi Kyle....i come from England and i started off doing Boom Operating for low budge feature films, short films and getting my foot/experiance etc that way...it was then i moved to London and wrote to Sound Recordsts to see if i could get in with them. I was lucky enough to get a job as a sound trainee for one week on a BBC program ( I was coveing for another sound trainee who was on holiday that week) and it was then my Sound Recordist said to me....Take a step back"...ie do some mores sound trainiee jobs. He wasnt putting me down but he relised that i had so much more to learn...that he wanted me to take it slowly and go back into the shallow end of the pool and slowly swim.....I had basicly jumped into the middle... I took his adivice and did more sound trainee stuff and then as time went buy and i spoke to other sound people i did low budget (free) shorts/feature films doing sound. I had not had my own equipment yet but i hired, Then i with advice from othe sound people got basic equipment. Those non paid jobs are important as they get you the contacts cos they are the ones that open doors. I now do sound recording and over the years slowly built up equipment...saying that i need to get more. I havent been USA for long now so i am learning what filming is like here compared to England. Its great with all the on set experiance you have got and the advice that Kirk above has said really says it all.....Get out there and network AND work hard and make a good impression also be patient these things take time. Juliet is right, I think that after you get all the connections, and you have GOT, the latest equipment to keep you pertinent, then you will continue to get gigs,after the talent is there, cause the film biz that i have found is very fickle and very repetitional, so, you have to be very vigilant, worker, trust me i have been in this crazy biz for 33 years

No your not!! Being late once you can forgive but being late most days is taking the P155 , losing a scene and an audio file? This costs money and time for you/crew and the actors. Sorry cant help feeling that maybe this is not the right careera for them!! mmmmmm?!!!

Rock, another alternative might be to bury the "in association" credit with small and unreadable font. '-) But I agree, you need to send a message that being a "for hire" company carries with it a degree of dependability that being paid demands. If they are new and work cheap, then some of that can be overlooked, but they must realize that future work depends on getting their act together.

Bottom line Rock. You paid, they didnt deliver. breach of contract. You owe them nothing and if they complain, tell them you want to be reimbursed for time wasted and lost material. Until that happens, you will not give them the credit.

One thing to consider before acting on any advice you've received here is that we are giving that advice and support after hearing only one side of things. Always leave room for mitigating circumstances in your dispute.

I'm with you James. After I lie down at night. But I've also got a pad and pencil there, so good inspirations can be captured (I always seem to lose them by morning). It keeps me up later, but worth it.

In the shower or during my train commute with my eyes closed and my buds in.

The moment I switch off the light and go to bed, SUDDENLY, ideas, scenes and dialogue invade my mind - naturally, one has to bloody get up and write the stuff, because I NEVER remember it in the morning - a damn nuisance, but some inspired work almost every time - can it get any worse? Yes, when the characters come to life and begin conversing with you - interesting experience, but it doesn't enhance one's sleep.

No to be honest no camera audio is ever as good as if you hire a sound recordist that can give you much better and clearer sound....Can i ask what sound are you recording? Thanks:)

but am not saying it wont record adn you wont get any sound you will of course..but i do think if you want good sound then get a sound recordist.

It's for a short film, will be inside and outside shoots, and a small part would be recording a choir - yeah I thought that, might just use the Red sound as a backup because I have 2 external recorders as well
