On Backstory... Last year I was asked to direct a two-hander for actors' showreels. They had a random dramatic piece, a tad gobbldy-gook, that didn't make absolute sense. The short story is about two crim women, good friends. But one has a problem with the other and shoots her. There had to be a really good reason and it wasn't in the script. The character and portrayal was all going to come from the back-story so this is what I invented: Woman 1 (the dark one with the gun) has a 14 year old daughter. She died earlier that day. She was raped and bashed into a coma. She'd opened here eyes just once when Woman 2 visited. Woman 2's husband (father of her 15 year old son) killed in a shootout years ago. She hooks up with husband's brother and they marry. She does it so her son can have a male role model. Problem is he runs meth. He despises Woman 1 because she knows what an arsewipe he can be. Woman 2 often bears the bruises and cut lip to show for it. Both teens grew up together. Are best buddies. Daughter of Woman 1 going to meet friends in the city for a movie is ambushed and smashed unconscious by arsewipe, bagged and shoved into his car. He picks up Woman 2's son. This is his initiation into manhood, huh? Oh yeah. Arsewipe drives to an abandoned lot, feeds teenage boy mega line of speed, drags teenage girl from backseat and rapes her. She stirs and he knocks her out again. He passes her to the boy to do same. He does. She comes to consciousness and pulls off the bag just as finishes. He realises what he's done. Is beyond devastated. Arsewipe bags her again, bashes her head in with a rock. He warns teenage boy to say nothing or his mother will suffer beyond anything he could imagine. Boy shuts up when at home later. Obviously inconsolable over something. Passer-by discovers daughter of Woman 1 and calls cops. She is hospitalised. Woman 1 contacts best friend Woman 2. Woman 2 puts it all together and confronts son who confesses. Woman 2 goes to the hospital. Woman 2 puts together a plan to take out a hit on husband for what he did. Does not realise that daughter of Woman 1 died that afternoon and that Woman 1 holds Woman 2 responsible for not sorting the situation out immediately. She does, however, hint that even the son is not safe. Woman 2 does not know what to do and begs Woman 1. Woman 1 shoots her. Not pleased with the visuals, no depth of field and the lighting didn't happen as it should. Shit happens and all that. Check out the short and see if you can put the dialogue with the back story. Thing is, both women have children so they were really able to get into the mood of the story. And yes, my back story freaked them out. That's sometimes necessary for the drama.
