"Bedlam Express" A piece of racing sculpture under construction at the Artisans Asylum, for the upcoming June 6th race that opens the Cambridge river festival. Since the Asylum is all about getting tools into peoples hands, and taking inspiration from another race that used to happen in their home city, (Belt Sander Drag Racing) we are building a giant model of a modified class racer. (Scale 1 foot to the inch - the prototype is just over 12" long, the model just over 12' long) Construction is various kinds of foam, over a welded steel frame. The appearance of aluminum castings is going to be faked by a layer of "space blankets", the metalized mylar sheets that they hand runners at the end of a marathon. The prototype is a late 50's design, known to collectors as a "locomotive" style machine, as it draws styling cues from the streamlined passenger trains of the day. Bet you didn't know mid century modern style extended to mundane shop tools.
Dizzy the cat. A bird circles overhead, her head swings side to side, trying to track it, and her right paw tries to bat it out of the sky. Shown here in front of the MIT Museum, during the Cambridge Science Festival. When you move it, power is taken from one of the rear wheels, and used to move the various animated elements. Made with the help(?) of a group of kids aged 7 to 12.
Work in progress, a bit of racing sculpture. Built with a bunch of 7-12 year old kids in 4 days. As the machine is pushed along, the head turns side to side, the right paw is overhead, and batting at a bird circling over its head.
