About Ted

Ted A. Irving graduated from the Sam Houston State University Dan Rather School of Communications in 1992, with a BFA in Radio, TV, and Film. He acquired his Master of Arts degree in Mass Communications from Texas Southern University in 2003. Ted has worked in the television industry Since 1993 working primarily as a linear/non-linear video editor for KTRK ABC 13, and KPRC NBC 2, then as a sports photographer with KRIV Fox 26. All in Houston, Texas as part of a dual-career in media and education.
Ted was the instructor, and Director of the Hightower High School Electronic Media Academy located in Fort Bend ISD, Missouri City, Texas, for twelve years. Under Ted Irving’s leadership, the media academy won a Texas Regional Emmy, one Summit Award, and 18 National Telly Awards. He was also able to secure a 2006 Japan Fulbright Fellowship, $5,000 Best Buy Teacher Technology Grant, Houston Press Master Mind $2,000 Award, Kids In Need $1,000 grant, Captain Planet Foundation $2,300 grant, Target Field Trip grant and much more. Ted Irving is also a former Hightower Teacher of the Year and the HAABSE (Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators) secondary Teacher of the Year in 2002.
In 2014 Ted became the Magnet Coordinator for the Jack Yates School of Communications and helped the program to install a 3.5 million dollar Television facility at the school complete with Dante networking from the control room to the satellite theatre control room and to all sports areas with AV connections for live to solid- state recording sporting events with color & play-by-play. The facility also boasts 10 Sony AS-7 mirrorless 4k cameras for narrative film, 15 Sony handycams for ENG work, and 20 small Canon Vixia’s for intro level courses. While there Ted developed curriculum to match the new offerings at the school which include narrative filmmaking, Sports ENG, and music recording.
As a freelance videographer, Ted has worked for Court TV, Major Broadcasting Cable Network, and Black Entertainment TV. His ENG cinematic work includes three documentaries, Burning Sands, & Gus & Rose: Reflections of Katrina and the Big Easy, and Soul Alley, a documentary completed in early 2019. The first two were contracted for distribution through Blockbuster video stores. Ted has also collaborated with the Texas Southern University Mass Communication department to create the Houston Civil Rights Movement online documentary for PBS and the Black Programming Consortium in 2007.
Ted Irving is currently the Director of the City of Houston – HTV-Houston Television PEG channel located in downtown, Houston, City Hall where he oversees a staff of 18 that serves the city of Houston by providing live broadcasts of the weekly city council meetings, planning and commission meetings, as well as some broadcast journalism and TV production services.
