About Craig

I'm an Australian advertising and television director currently living in New York. In the past 20 years, I directed some of Australia's best-loved and most outrageous comedians including over 120 episodes of television for the likes of The Chaser, John Safran and Lawrence Leung.

I've also directed hundreds of TVCs including spots for clients such as Expedia, Air New Zealand, Honda, Singapore Airlines, McDonald's, Sportbet, Royal Australian Air Force, Qantas, Mission Foods and Carnival Cruise Lines.

My work has won multiple Cannes Lions, Australian Directors Guild Awards, AFI Awards, Australian Cinematographer's Society Awards, and also the Grand Prix at the Mumbrella Awards and Spikes Asia.

For US commercials, I'm repped by Hey Presto. For Australian TVCs, I'm repped by Airbag.

I'm always on the lookout for projects to direct, especially if it involves comedy or travelling to exotic locations.

  • The Late Report

    The Late Report (1999)
Television (Comedy) Director This short-lived attempt to revive live comedy on Channel 7 was a combination of interviews, popular culture, trivia and topical current affairs with a light hearted bent. The program was equally hosted by all the those credited in the cast, although Richard Stubbs took a leading role. The program was initially the second half hour in an hour, and was preceded by a woefully bad 'The Big News'. Soon, however, 'The Big News' was axed and 'The Late Report' took over the entire hour. • John Safran: Media Tycoon

    John Safran: Media Tycoon (1998)
Television by Craig Melville (Documentary) Director, Editor, Cinematographer In this pilot which was never aired on Australian television, John Safran demonstrates the innovative talent he is capable of. The program is essentially a magazine-style presentation of social rebellion and challenge to Australian institutions. In what has become the most famous (and litigious) incident, Safran and A Current Affair 'victim' Shane Paxton rummage through Ray Martin's garbage, and are soon approached by an angry Martin and his wife. Classic television in a similar vain to the work of American Michael Moore, which was deemed too controversial by the ABC to screen and was also beyond the pail for the commercial networks Written by Benjamin Sharp <absharp@hotmail.com>
