Samantha Mauney Aiken
Dialect Coach/ Language Consultant

Hi all, I'm seeking some advice for how to position myself as a dialect coach or langauge consultant. In addition to being a filmmaker, I'm also getting my Ph.D. in Linguistics, and have experience teaching accent modification. I'd like to help people improve language in their films, whether it's a...

Thanks for responding. I am a sociolinguist by training. I'm familiar with most varieties of American English. I have taught college classes to foreigners trying to mitigate their accent. My question is about how to break into the market, or how to find people searching for these services.

Douglas Eugene Mayfield

If you have not tried them, you might get information from SAG or Backstage.

Beth E. Barry

One way would be to offer conservatory classes at SAG-AFTRA events for a minimum price to show people what you can do to help them. I go to such events and pay 10-15 dollars...20 or 30 people show up,...

What are some ways to get cheap wardrobe for your film's cast?

Hey Stage 32 fam! I was on a low-budget shoot recently and someone asked me about tips for getting an awesome wardrobe for little money. I shared one tip I knew (read about it below) and wrote a blog post about it. I'd love to know if you guys have any other tips for getting a diverse wardrobe for y...

Thrift stores are the best option. Some cast will provide their own wardrobe without being asked. Amazon has some good cheap options that will arrive quickly, but I avoid them for ethical reasons if there are other avenues available.

Kim Gelvin (Gelvin-Wilks, Gelvin-Melville)

Another option is to find stores to sponsor your film for a credit. You have to return items dry cleaned or buy them if they get damaged. One example was when I did it for a low budget feature when I...

@Andrew - Your response embodies everything I love about this community. You gave me (and others, I would think) much to consider. If this is a "B or C" camera, what would you consider A in this price range either to purchase or rent?

Sorry, confusing terminology on my part. Shouldn’t write these notes during a conference call :-) I meant a B or C level camera, not a B or C camera on a given production. We all have our own ranking...

How Long is Too Long to Spend on a Single Script?

A few years back, before I joined Stage 32 I had spend years in this particular screenplay, then one month I heard RB say in one of his monthly webinars, after three rewrites, he moves on. That day I decided it was time to let that story, which remains one of my favorite, to let it be. I moved on to...

Means of Finding Cast And Crew

I recently moved back to the Midwest and have had a hard time finding crew and actors. Breakdown Services is effective at finding a cast, but has a convoluted internal messaging system. Aside from it, Craigslist and Stage 32, what websites do you use to find cast and crew?

Tony Cella

Thanks for the suggestions. Most of my gigs are non-paying at the moment, which is part of the issue in finding crew, but that may change soon. Finding talent for free isn't an issue, but the messagin...

Where's The Money At?

Is it in Directing? Producing? Writing? All of the above? Different people ask for different amounts. If you were to make a chart/list, who would go first in terms of climbing up the ladder?

Samantha Mauney Aiken

Passion plays a role, but perhaps more importantly, be the absolute BEST at what you do. You can make $0 being an indie director or big bucks as a producer working for a major studio if you cut your teeth on some quality projects first

Evelien And Dorien Twins

That's kind of a vague question. If you're doing it for the money, our suggestion would be to be as proficient as you can in your chosen field so they can make you...you know... a lot of money... ther...

Working in Canada as an American

Hey. I'm a short 5 hour drive from Toronto and I always hear about interesting shoots happening there, but as an American I fear my citizenship status might make filmmakers hesitant to add me to their crew. I have considered just volunteering my time, but I would love to know if anyone here has any advice to share about getting a Canadian work permit.

Sandrene Mathews

If the shoot is done by a Canadian producer, they can't hire you unless you have a skill that they can't find in a local citizen. So you're not likely to be able to get a PA job. If it's a production...
